Men's Tennis Has Postseason Run Stopped in NCAA Quarterfinals

WACO, Texas โ The UCLA men's tennis team had its postseason run stopped Friday evening by third-seeded Texas, which recorded a 4-1 victory in NCAA Championship quarterfinal-round action at Hurd Tennis Center.
Emon van Loben Sels recorded a two-win day for the Bruins (19-9), who entered play riding an 11-match winning streak. Timo Legout, Sebastian Eriksson and clincher Pierre-Yves Bailly prevailed in order for the Longhorns (29-4), who collected the doubles point in a tiebreaker.
No doubles pair was able to establish a comfortable lead, with the matches on Courts 1 and 3 at one point showing simultaneous 5-5 scores. Texas struck first on Court 2, as No. 2 Jonah Braswell/Sebastian Gorzny broke the serve of Spencer Johnson/Aadarsh Tripathi for 3-2 en route to a 6-4 victory.
An answer came from van Loben Sels/Gianluca Ballotta on Court 3, where the UCLA pair broke for 6-5 and followed with a win-sealing hold against No. 81 Bailly/Eriksson. Fittingly, the top-court showdown went to a tiebreaker. The 10th-ranked Texas tandem of Legout/Lucas Brown would claw out of a 3-5 hole and outlast Alexander Hoogmartens/Giacomo Revelli 7-3 to take the final game.
The Longhorns nabbed five first sets, with No. 110 van Loben Sels taking the lone Bruin one. The redshirt sophomore's breakout season was completed with his highest-ranked win yet, a 6-3, 7-6(2) decision over No. 26 Gorzny on Court 2 that pulled UCLA level at 1-1. The victory moved van Loben Sels' year-end singles record to 24-9 overall and 14-4 in dual-match play. He went 10-4 opposite nationally-ranked foes with his latest performance.
National No. 1 Legout took down No. 20 Rudy Quan 7-5, 6-2 on the top court. Moments later, Eriksson got the better of No. 35 Johnson in a 6-4, 6-4 result on Court 4. Finally, No. 54 Bailly held outlasted Bigun 6-4, 6-4 to seal the decision on Court 3.
Texas earned the opportunity to face No. 2 seed TCU in Saturday's second semifinal. The opener will see top-seeded Wake Forest take on No. 4 seed Stanford.
