Men's Tennis Trio Earns All-America Honors
May 28, 2025 | Men's Tennis
GILBERT, Ariz. -- Three members of the UCLA men's tennis team were named All-Americans Tuesday by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA). First-time honorees Spencer Johnson (singles), Alexander Hoogmartens (doubles) and Aadarsh Tripathi (doubles) each qualified after standout performances at the NCAA individual championships.
The criteria for ITA All-America singles honors include winning the ITA All-American Championship, advancing to the round of 16 at the NCAA individual championships, or finishing in the top 20 of the final ITA singles rankings. All-America recognition is awarded to doubles teams who win the ITA All-American Championship, reach the quarterfinals at the NCAA individual championships, or finish in the top 10 of the final ITA doubles rankings.
Johnson reached the NCAA singles quarterfinals in his first career appearance, beating No. 42 Kenta Miyoshi of Illinois, No. 33 Braden Shick of NC State and Duncan Chan of TCU. Johnson received his NCAA individuals berth by winning the ITA Southwest Regional Championships singles title earlier in the fall. He climbed to a career-best No. 12 in the ITA singles rankings early in dual-match play and finished at No. 40 despite an injury-shortened campaign. Johnson logged a 17-7 singles record (7-5 dual) in 2024-25, beating seven of his dozen ranked opponents. He sealed the Bruins' 4-2 win against crosstown rival USC in NCAA Championships super-regional action.
Hoogmartens and Tripathi had never played together before winning five matches to claim the ITA Southwest Regional Championships doubles title. That run earned the pair an NCAA doubles spot, which Hoogmartens/Tripathi turned into a quarterfinals spot before bowing out due to injury. A 7-0 fall placed the tandem 10th in the ITA doubles rankings. Hoogmartens/Tripathi collected its second ranked victory during ITA Kickoff Weekend, when it beat No. 14 Ryan Colby/Thomas Paulsell of Georgia 7-5. Hoogmartens finished the season playing alongside fellow senior Giacomo Revelli on the top court, while Tripathi and Johnson collaborated on an 8-1 record to close out the year.
