Bruins Fall at Ohio State, 2-1

September 29, 2025 | Men's Soccer

Columbus, Ohio – The UCLA men's soccer team fell 2-1 to Ohio State at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium on the campus of Ohio State on Monday evening. Artem Vovk scored his first goal of the season in the loss.

The Bruins (2-5-2, 2-2-0 Big Ten) outshot the Buckeyes (5-4-0, 2-1-0, Big Ten 19-5, and had seven shots on target in the game. UCLA also had 12 corners and forced six saves from the Ohio State keeper. Ander Marticorena and Artem Vovk both had four shots and two shots on target to lead the Bruins offensively.

Monday's game started brightly for the Bruins, as Ohio State's Nick McHenry was shown a red card for a tackle on UCLA's Sergi Solans Ormo in the seventh minute of action, therefore reducing OSU to 10 men for the remainder of the night.

However, despite being down a man, it was Ohio State who struck first in the 29th minute of action.  Ohio State took possession and dribbled towards the end line inside UCLA's penalty box, where Tre Wright took down a Buckeye in the box before Marko Borkovic slotted home the penalty to give OSU a 1-0 lead.

That's how the first half would end, and the Buckeyes took a 1-0 lead into the break.

As for the second half, the Bruins continued to dominate possession as they searched for the equalizing goal. That goal came in the 62nd minute, as Artem Vovk scored his first goal of the season from the penalty spot to tie the game at 1-1.

Unfortunately for UCLA, Ohio State answered 42 seconds later at the 62:13 mark of the game. Ashton Billow ripped a shot from just outside the box and sent it past Ryan Tiltack in goal for the Bruins, giving the Buckeyes a 2-1 advantage with just under 30 minutes to play.

In the final 25 minutes of action, the Bruins had seven shots but could not cash in, and Ohio State earned a 2-1 win on Monday night.

Up Next: UCLA returns home to face Maryland on Friday night. Kickoff is set for 5:00 pm PT, and the game will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
