Women's Tennis Beats San Diego State to Open Dual Play

January 18, 2026 | Women's Tennis

LOS ANGELES โ€“ The 17th-ranked UCLA women's tennis team secured the first five points of its dual-season opener en route to a 5-2 victory against San Diego State Sunday at Los Angeles Tennis Center. SDSU got on the board by way of two 10-point, third-set tiebreakers.

Mayu Crossley had an impressive debut for the Bruins, helping clinch the doubles point alongside fellow freshman Kayla Chung before prevailing in singles play. Olivia Center and Kate Fakih also had two-win days. Gloria Alogo and Teja Tirunelveli were victorious for the Aztecs (1-1).

SDSU struck first in doubles play, as Jayna Clemens and Ninon Martinache teamed to beat Ahmani Guichard and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer 6-3 on Court 2. UCLA answered on Court 1, where Center and Fakih took down the 23rd-ranked duo of Jo-Yee Chan and Vessa Turley by a 6-4 margin. Center/Fakih now has 14 career ranked victories after totaling 13 as freshmen. Then, with all eyes on Court 3, Chung and Crossley broke the serve of Alogo and Liisa Varul for 6-4 and the day's first point.

No. 75 Fakih, who led the Bruins with 28 total singles wins in 2024-25, raced out to a 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Clemens on Court 3 to kick off the second portion of play. Crossley finished soon after on the next court up, topping Martinache 6-3, 6-2. Crossley posted three singles victories during the fall, qualifying for the NCAA Championship singles tournament.

Nearly simultaneously, Center and Lutkemeyer won to ensure overall team win. Center collected the final five games to defeat Vesa Gjinaj 6-1, 6-4. Lutkemeyer settled in after dropping her initial set, logging the first ranked victory of her senior season โ€“ a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 decision over No. 88 Chan on Court 1.

The Aztecs got on the board with a pair of results on the back courts. Alogo outlasted Guichard 6-4, 4-6, 1-0(7) on Court 4 before Tirunelveli bested Chung 6-7(4), 6-4, 1-0(4) on Court 6.

UCLA is on the road until Feb. 14, next traveling to Baton Rouge, La. for ITA Kickoff Weekend. The Bruins next face UCF on Saturday, Jan. 24 at the LSU Tennis Complex, with first serve scheduled for 9 a.m. PT. Another match will follow Sunday regardless of outcome, with LSU and Marshall also in the four-team field.
