Bruins Score Season-High in 197.425-196.900 Win Over Spartans
East Lansing, Mich. - A short-handed UCLA squad posted a season-high team score to remain unbeaten in conference play after a 197.425-196.900 win at Michigan State. Senior Jordan Chiles recorded the highest all-around total in the nation with a 39.875 that included her second perfect 10 in as many weeks, this time on floor exercise. ย
Chiles, who finished just .025 off her personal-best all-around mark of 39.900, won all four events and the all-around for the second time this season. She scored 9.975 on vault, 9.950 on uneven bars, 9.950 on balance beam to tie for first with teammate Ciena Alipio, and 10.00 on floor exercise. The perfect 10 on floor was her seventh on the event and her 13th career 10.
The fifth-ranked Bruins had strong contributions from newcomers to the lineup. With illness sidelining a few team members, Sydney Barros, Jordis Eichman, Ciena Alipio and Ashlee Sullivan stepped in to fill lineup spots. Barros, who only had competed on uneven bars in two previous meets in her career, contributed 9.900s on both of her counting routines - on uneven bars and floor exercise - and added a 9.850 exhibition routine on balance beam for good measure. Eichman, a freshman, made her collegiate debut, scoring 9.825 on balance beam and 9.750 on vault. She also scored 9.775 on uneven bars in an exhibition performance. Alipio, a senior, made her collegiate debut on uneven bars, and hit for a 9.875 to tie for third place. She also tied for first on beam with Chiles for the second-straight meet, and added a 9.850 on floor exercise. Sullivan competed on balance beam for the first time and scored 9.775.
UCLA hit season-highs on vault (49.300) and floor exercise (49.450) and improved on its season-high team score for the third-straight week.
The Bruins (6-2, 2-0 in the Big Ten) return home on Friday, Jan. 30 for a dual meet vs. Washington at 7pm in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom Financial. Tickets for the meet, UCLA's annual Pride Meet, are on sale at uclabruins.com/tickets.
