Men’s Golf Finishes in Second Place at The Goodwin
March 26, 2026 | Men's Golf
STANFORD, Calif. – The UCLA men's golf team finished in second place out of 30 teams on Saturday at The Goodwin, a three-day tournament that took place at Stanford Golf Club.
As a team, the Bruins shot 13-under 827. UCLA finished four strokes behind first-place Stanford (17-under 823) after having finished in first place at the same tournament last season. UCLA had entered the day in a tie for first place with BYU. The Bruins shot 1-under 279 in the third and final round on Saturday. Stanford entered the third round one stroke behind UCLA and finished 6-under 274 on Saturday.
Bruins' freshman Josh Kim (T-6th overall) recorded his first top-10 finish as a collegiate golfer – his second top-20 finish this season. Kim shot 6-under 204 over three days, tying for sixth place with Long Beach State's Alejandro De Castro. He finished in a tie for 13th place earlier this month at The Desimone Invitational in Daly City, Calif.
"It was a good week for the boys," head coach Armen Kirakossian said. "We felt like we'd been building some momentum, even if the results from our last few tournaments may not have shown it. With our recent finishes, we felt like we were getting better and we had guys who had been improving. This week, our guys did well at staying steady. In each round, we had all five guys in it. Even if a mistake was made, we had it covered up by the other guy. That's hugely helpful.
"We had a tough pill to swallow to be in the lead with nine holes to go in the tournament. We had Josh [Kim] and Tyler [Loree] in our one and three positions as freshmen. That's something that they've never experienced yet on this team. For them to be in such a tight finish, coming down the stretch, it's just a great opportunity for them to be in that moment, even though it didn't pan out for us. We know that will help us in the future. We've been really impressed with what Josh has been doing for the last two weeks. He finished in the top 10 this week, and that's impressive for any player but especially with freshman. And for Josh to do that up here in Northern California, where he is from, we're just excited for him and for his progress. Josh and Tyler have very bright futures. We are looking forward to the next tournament and we want to built on this little momentum. Sure, we are a little disappointed and somewhat deflated to not come away with the trophy, but we're really encouraged with what we saw this week."
Kim tallied round scores of 69-65-70 at The Goodwin. He finished ahead of four UCLA teammates, as senior Kyle An surged among the individual leaders on Saturday with a 5-under 65 finish in the third round. An concluded the tournament in a tie for 15th place (3-under 207, 69-73-65), while junior Alex Papayoanou was tied for 19th place at 2-under 208.
Sophomore Baylor Larrabee carded 4-over 214 (T-59, 74-69-71) and freshman Tyler Loree finished with a score of 5-over 215 (T-66, 70-71-74).
An and Kim each recorded par-5 eagles on Saturday – Kim on the par-5 first hole, and An on the par-5 seventh hole. An finished the morning with one eagle, five birdies and two bogeys. Kim registered one eagle, two birdies and four bogeys in his final round.
Finishing behind Stanford (first) and UCLA (second) were, in order, New Mexico, BYU and Long Beach State. SMU and California tied for sixth place, while Colorado and Utah tied for eighth place.
UCLA will return to action with one more golf tournament, ahead of the Big Ten Tournament. The Bruins will be in action at The Thunderbird Collegiate, hosted at Papago Golf Course in Phoenix, Ariz., on April 10-11. This season's Big Ten Tournament is scheduled from May 1-3, at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore.
