Rowan Surpasses 4,000 Assists as No. 1 UCLA Beats No. 14 Stanford, 3-0

STANFORD, Calif. โ The No. 1 UCLA men's volleyball team swept No. 14 Stanford at Stanford in an MPSF conference match on Friday evening. Senior setter Andrew Rowan surpassed 4,000 career assists in the win. Set scores on the night were 25-17, 25-23, and 25-20.
With the win, the Bruins improve to 19-0 on the year and 6-0 in MPSF play, while Stanford (9-9, 6-1 MPSF) suffers its first loss in MPSF play.
Rowan, a senior from Trabuco Canyon, California, becomes the second Bruin in the rally scoring era (since 2001) to surpass 4,000 assists, which he did with his 27th assist of the night. The only other UCLA men's volleyball player to have at least 4,000 assists in the rally scoring era is Rich Nelson, who recorded 4,346 assists between 2001 and 2003.
The Bruins hit .373 as a team as middle blockers Cameron Thorne and Micah Wong Diallo led the way offensively with 10 kills and eight kills, respectively.
UCLA started the match with a 5-0 run as a block from Wong Diallo and Sean Kelly put UCLA in front 3-0, before a David Decker service ace made it a 5-0 Bruins advantage.
Stanford tied it at 11-11, before the Bruins went on a 6-1 run to take a 17-12 lead. During that 6-1 run, kills from Kelly, Wong Diallo, and Zach Rama earned the five-point lead.
With Rowan at the service line the Cardinal recorded back-to-back attack errors to give the Bruins the first set, 25-17.
As for the second set, UCLA raced out to a 11-6 advantage, with Thorne recording UCLA seventh service ace of the match to put the Bruins in front by five.
A Stanford service error made it 15-10 in favor of UCLA before Stanford cut the Bruin lead to two, 17-19,when Luke McFall tallied a kill.
The Bruins pushed in front by three, 22-19, when Rowan tallied a kill. UCLA then ended the second set wit ha 25-23 win when Thorne hammered home a kill to give the Bruins a 2-0 advantage heading in to the third set.
In the third set, the Bruins continued to pile on the pressure offensively and from the service line. After hitting .414 in the second set, UCLA opened up a 5-3 advantage in the third set when Rama recorded another kill.
Stanford tied the set at 6-6, before a 4-1 UCLA run gave the Bruins a 10-7 lead. Decker's third service ace of the night gave UCLA the three-point lead.
Back-to-back kills from Thorne made it 16-13 in favor of the Bruins midway through the set. A block from Wong Diallo and Rama pushed the Bruins in front by four, 21-17, as the Bruins looked to close out the match.
Two kills from Rama gave the Bruins the third set, 25-20, and the match 3-0. With the sweep, the Bruins have now recorded 13 sweeps in 19 matches so far in the 2026 season.
