No. 2 Bruins Beat Two Ranked Teams on Day One of MPSF Midseason Rumble

LOS ANGELES – No. 2 UCLA soared on Day One of the MPSF Rumble at Mapes Beach. The Bruins (9-2) defeated No. 16 Grand Canyon, 4-1, then downed No. 18 Washington, 5-0, to conclude the afternoon.

UCLA started its day with a 4-1 win against GCU. Harper Cooper and Jesse Dueck teamed up for an efficient win on court 4, giving the Bruins the first point of the game with their 21-17, 21-13 win over Jessica Drake and Youna Coens. Ensley Alden and Ava Williamson finished soon after, winning a thriller, 21-19, 24-22, on court 2 over Mae Manthe and Rhea Kohl. The match concluded with Alden scoring the winning point off an ace. Maggie Boyd and Sally Perez clinched the match for UCLA in their 21-17, 21-13 victory on court 1 over Karynn Garrow and Rebecca Drake. Court 5 resulted in a three-set battle, with Mallory LaBreche and Adelina Okazaki leaving the match victorious against Michael Wittren and Jordyn Decker, 21-15, 18-21, 15-7. GCU's Katie Keefe and Sarah Edler won the final match against Cassie Dodd and Alexa Fernandez, 10-21, 22-20, 21-19.

Washington took consecutive 5-0 losses to No. 5 Texas and the No. 2 Bruins. Dodd and Dueck started the wins for UCLA over the Huskies, beating Ella Tyus and Sarah Wilcock on court 4, 15-21, 21-15, 15-11. Following their teammates' lead, Alden and Williamson won their three-set clash against Niki Egan and Mariana Tomasova on court 2, 21-15, 18-21, 15-6. Kenzie Brower and Taylor Ford dominated on court 5, beating Alina Urzua and Avery Towne, 21-10, 21-8. Kaley Mathews teamed up with Cooper to take down Zoe Pabarcus and MayaMay Brown on court 3, giving the Bruins a 4-0 lead with their 21-9, 21-9 win. Boyd and Perez closed out the day for UCLA on court 1, completing the comeback and beating Katarina Pantovic and Emma Hohenauer, 17-21, 21-10, 15-7.

The Bruins continue the MPSF Midseason Rumble Saturday with a pair of matches against Oregon at 1 p.m. PT and No. 1 Stanford at 3 p.m. PT.
