LOS ANGELES - No. 2 UCLA recorded wins over Oregon (5-0)ย and top-ranked Stanford (4-1) on Saturday afternoon at Mapes Beach to complete the MPSF Midseason Rumble with an unbeaten 4-0 record. The Bruins lost only one match on the day, improving their home record for the season to 8-0.
UCLA (11-2) opened its day by handing Oregon, who itself had earlier in the day suffered a sweep courtesy of No. 5 Texas, another 5-0 defeat.ย
Harper Cooper and Jessie Dueck teamed up to give UCLA their first win, beating Sofia Taylor and Hanna Bjornson on court 4, 21-17, 21-16. Duo Kaley Mathews and Ensley Alden displayed their strength after making a strong comeback to win the first set, 23-21, before smoothly sailing through the second set, 21-12, on court 2 over Gwen Fife and AJ Slojkowski. Cassie Dodd and Adelina Okazaki clinched the win for the Bruins, defeating Natasha George and Landree Coats on court 4 in straight sets, 21-15, 21-16. Ava Williamson and Alexa Fernandez had one of the most efficient wins of the day, beating Daley McClellan and Elsa Snipes 21-9, 21-11 on court 3 in only 31 minutes. Sally Perez and Maggie Boyd closed the match for the Bruins excitingly with their 21-15, 21-14 win over Bella Gamache and Liz Rossi to give UCLA the 5-0 win without dropping a set.
ย
After No. 1 Stanford narrowly beat Texas 3-2 in their earlier match, the Bruins handed them their second loss of the season, winning 4-1 in a top-two match-up. Stanford took the first match, with Charlotta Bell and Logan Tusher defeating Ava Williamson and Jesse Dueck 21-13, 21-16 on court 4, but UCLA came back to win each of the four remaining matches. Mathews and Alden instantly responded on court 2 with a dominant performance, defeating Avery Jackson and Brooke Rockwell 21-16, 21-19. The rest of the team followed court 2's lead, starting with Cooper and Fernandez's win against Clara Stowell and Indigo Clark on court 3, 21-16, 21-17. Seeking revenge for their loss against Kelly Belardi and Ruby Sorra on Feb. 20, Perez and Boyd defeated the two thrillingly, scoring 21-18, 21-16 to clinch the match for the Bruins on court 1. Kenzie Brower and Mallory LaBreche closed out the match seconds later, beating Chloe Hoffman and Elena Fisher 21-18, 21-18.
