Men's Golf Finishes in Fifth Place at The Thunderbird Collegiate

PHOENIX – The UCLA men's golf team finished in fifth place out of nine teams through the final round of play at The Thunderbird Collegiate at Papago Golf Club on Saturday.
The Bruins had entered the third and final round of action in sixth place. UCLA shot 4-under 280 on Saturday to move into fifth place. Through all three rounds, the Bruins carded 10-under 842, two strokes ahead of sixth place Colorado.
New Mexico won the two-day tournament, shooting 32-under 820. The Lobos registered a four-stroke lead over host institution Arizona State (28-under 824). Long Beach State finished in third place, while San Diego recorded a fourth-place finish.
UCLA sophomore Baylor Larrabee shot 4-under 67 on Saturday, moving into a tie for ninth place on the individual leaderboard. Larrabee's score in the third round marked the best individual round of any UCLA player through the tournament. He finished the tournament having scored 5-under 208, with round scores of 69-72-67.
UCLA freshmen Tyler Loree and Josh Kim tied for 22nd place. Each of the Bruins' freshmen shot 2-under 211 through the two-day tournament. Kim shot 3-under 68 on Saturday.
Junior Alex Papayoanou shot 1-over 214, while senior Kyle An finished 3-over 216. Competing as an individual for the Bruins, senior Matthew Yamin shot 7-over 220.
New Mexico's Johnnie Clark secured the individual title at this year's The Thunderbird Collegiate, carding 14-under 199. He won the medal by three strokes.
The Bruins will return to action in three weeks at the Big Ten Championships, hosted at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club in North Plains, Ore. This year's tournament will run from Friday, May 1, through Sunday, May 3.
UCLA's Day One Recap
The Bruins finished in sixth place after the first two rounds of The Thunderbird Collegiate on Friday at Papago Golf Club.
As a team, UCLA carded 6-under 562 through the first two rounds, sitting one stroke behind fifth-place Colorado and 12 strokes away from the third-place squads, San Diego and host Arizona State. Nine programs are competing in this season's field in Phoenix.
Bruins' freshman Tyler Loree had the strongest individual performance for UCLA on Friday. He finished 4-uner 138 through two rounds, posting round scores of 2-under 69 in each round. Loree will enter Saturday's third and final round in a tie for 12th place.
UCLA senior Kyle An and sophomore Baylor Larrabee are currently tied for 22nd place, having carded 1-under 141 through the first 36 holes. Both golfers for UCLA shot 2-under 69 in the first round and 1-over 72 in the second round.
Junior Alex Papayoanou shot 1-over 143, while freshman Josh Kim finished Friday's action at 2-over 144.
Loree will enter Saturday's third round sitting five strokes behind the individual leader, Johnnie Clark of New Mexico (9-under 133). Long Beach State's Alejandro De Castro is in second place, at 8-under 134. Four golfers are tied for third place.
UCLA senior Matthew Yamin shot 3-over 145 on Friday, competing as an individual.
