Beach Volleyball Hosts CSU Bakersfield Tuesday on Senior Day, Plays at USC Thursday

No. 2 UCLA (25-4) hosts CSU Bakersfield on Tuesday, April 14 at 3pm in its final home match of the season at Mapes Beach. The Bruins' senior class of Maggie Boyd, Kenzie Brower and Jayla Shanks will be honored at the conclusion of the match. On Thursday, April 16, the Bruins will wrap up the regular season with a dual match at USC's Merle Norman Stadium at Noon. It will be the third consecutive week the Bruins have matched up with the Trojans. UCLA won both matches โ at Best of the West and at the Center of Effort Challenge โ 3-2. Thursday's match will be broadcast on Big Ten Plus.ย

UCLA won the Center of Effort Beach Volleyball Challenge in San Luis Obispo, beating USC 3-2 in the championship match. UCLA went 4-0 in the tournament, with wins over No. 9 California (4-1), No. 6 Cal Poly (3-2), No. 13 Arizona State (5-0) and No. 4 USC (3-2). The championship match was tightly contested, with the last two matches going to third-set tiebreakers. USC scored the first point with a court 5 win, but UCLA took the next two matches, with Kaley Mathews and Ensley Alden earning a 21-17, 21-18 victory on court 2, and Sally Perez and Maggie Boyd beating Kennedy Coakley and Zoey Henson, 27-25, 21-18. USC's Kyra Zaengle and Calinda Kok fought off two match points to pull out a 27-29, 21-15, 17-15 victory on court 4 and tie the match at 2-2, but Alexa Fernandez and Harper Cooper took the match for the Bruins a few minutes later with a 19-21, 21-18, 15-11 win on court 3.
BOYD MOVES INTO TOP 5 ON UCLA's ALL-TIME WIN LISTย
With three more victories last weekend, senior Maggie Boyd has moved into UCLA's Top 5 in career victories with 117, tying Lea Monkhouse (2019-22). Two more wins this week will put Boyd in a tie for fourth with Savvy Simo, who accumulated 119 wins from 2017-21. On Feb. 28, Boyd became the 11th Bruin to reach 100 career victories. She has 56 of her 117 wins with Perez, and the duo ranks No. 4 in school history for career wins as a pair, one victory behind Boyd and Lexy Denaburg, who totaled 57 from 2023-24. ย

Entering her 13th year with the Bruins and third season as UCLA's head coach is Olympian, national champion and UCLA Athletics Hall of Famer Jenny Johnson Jordan. The 2025 MPSF Coach of the Year, Johnson Jordan sports an overall record of 92-18 (.836) as she continues her 2026 campaign after leading the Bruins to a 32-7 record and NCAA semifinal appearance in 2025. She guided the Bruins to the NCAA Championship finals in her first year, ending the 2024 campaign with a 35-7 record and a second-place finish at the Pac-12 Championship. As an assistant coach, she helped the Bruins win back-to-back NCAA titles in 2018 and 2019. Another Bruin national champion serves as an assistant coach. Kelly Reeves, the Bruins' first-ever beach volleyball All-American and a 2011 NCAA indoor volleyball champion, returns for her third season on staff. Former AVP Beach Volleyball star Theo Brunner is in his first year as an assistant coach.

UCLA has been ranked No. 1 or 2 in every AVCA poll this week and is No. 2 for the second-straight week. Since 2018, no team has been ranked No. 1 for more weeks than the Bruins (46). USC has spent 27 weeks at No. 1 in the last seven years while TCU (10), Pepperdine (4), LSU (4), Stanford (4) and Florida State (1) round out the list.
