No. 9 Softball Ties Program Record With 27 Runs in Win at Long Beach State
April 15, 2026 | Softball
ย
After surrendering a 7-0 lead, the Bruins (39-5) rallied with 20 unanswered runs, scoring 12 in the seventh inning, six in the sixth and two in the fifth. UCLA's 27 runs matched its program record set against Santa Clara on Feb. 17, 2019.
ย
The Bruins matched their season high with 18 hits, including five home runs. Three of those homers were grand slams by Jordan Woolery, Kaniya Bragg and Bri Alejandre, marking the second time this season UCLA has hit multiple grand slams in a game. UCLA is now two home runs shy of tying the Big Ten Conference single-season home run record of 147 set by Ohio State last year.
ย
Bragg finished 4 for 6 with a career-high five RBIs and fell a triple shy of the cycle. The Pacifica High School product delivered two of UCLA's biggest offensive plays of the game. With UCLA trailing 9-7 and two outs in the top of the fifth, Bragg drove in two runs on a hard-hit ball that was misplayed by the Beach's (24-17) shortstop to tie the score.
ย
In the next inning, Bragg hit her second grand slam of the season to give UCLA a 15-9 lead.
ย
Megan Grant and Soo-Jin Berry also homered. Grant opened the scoring with a towering shot to right field in the first inning for her 30th home run of the season. She became the second player in UCLA history to reach the 30-homer mark and is one shy of tying Stacey Nuveman's program record of 31 set in 1999.
ย
Grant reached base in five of her six plate appearances, drawing four walks, which is tied for the second-most in a single game in program history. She also drew four walks earlier this season against BYU on Feb. 26.
ย
Berry's home run came in a pinch-hit appearance in the top of the seventh and was her first as a Bruin. She later added a single in her second at-bat of the inning.
ย
Rylee Slimp also made program history, tying the single-game record with five runs scored. Woolery and Jolyna Lamar each scored four runs.
ย
Senior Taylor Tinsley (22-3) pitched 3 2/3 shutout innings of relief to earn the win. After throwing a complete game the previous night against California Baptist, Tinsley struck out four and allowed four hits and one walk.
ย
Long Beach State erased UCLA's 7-0 lead with a seven-run, two-out rally in the bottom of the third inning. The rally began when Bruins starter Natalie Cable issued a hit-by-pitch and back-to-back walks to load the bases. Two-out hits by Avery Weisbrook (single), Elissa Guerrero (single), Audree Mendoza (triple) and Kali Su'e (single) drove in the seven runs.
ย
The Beach took its first lead in the fourth inning. UCLA reliever Sydney Somerndike allowed a double, hit a batter and walked another to load the bases with one out. Tinsley entered and was tasked with escaping the jam, but RBI hits by Nina Sepulveda and Guerrero gave Long Beach State a 9-7 advantage.
ย
Shortstop Aleena Garcia also recorded a career-high eight putouts.
ย
UCLA regained the lead in the sixth with the help of small ball. Garcia drew a leadoff walk, Alejandre followed with a bunt single and Ramsey Suarez laid down a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position. Back-to-back walks to Lamar and Slimp gave UCLA a 10-9 lead, which it did not relinquish.
ย
Lamar was 1-for-2 with three walks on the night.
