UCLA Posts 4-0 Win Over W. Michigan In First Round

LOS ANGELES - In the second NCAA Men's Tennis Regional match of the day at the Los Angeles Tennis Center on the campus of UCLA, the host Bruins defeated Western Michigan University 4-0. UCLA advances to Saturday's regional final at 3:00 p.m. against San Diego State University, a 4-1 winner over Tulsa in the morning match.
UCLA claimed the doubles point at the start of the match with victories on court Nos. 2 and 3. Marcin Rozpedski and Chris Sands got things started with an 8-2 win over Kyle Gernhofer and Demain Pons in the No. 3 slot. Jason Cook and Brandon Kramer secured the point with an identical score, 8-2, over Mohamed Dakki and Jeff Brink on court No. 2. UCLA's top team of Jean-Noel Grinda and Jong-Min Lee had a 6-5 lead over Steve Pillon and Ryan Tomlinson at the time of the suspension.
In singles action, it was Rozpedski who again finished first as he posted a 6-1, 6-1 win over Brink on court No. 6. Lee put the Bruins ahead 3-0 with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Pillon in the No. 4 position. The clinching match again came on court No. 1 where Grinda defeated Dakki 6-3, 6-0.
Western Michigan was up a set on two of the remaining three courts at the time of the suspension of play. On court No. 2 WMU's Fernando Garcia led UCLA's Zack Fleishman 7-5, 3-2. In the No. 3 slot, Tomlinson claimed a first-set tiebreaker over UCLA's Cook 7-6(3) and won the first game of the second set. In the final match Kramer had the Bruins ahead 6-1, 2-1 on court No. 5.
Tomorrow's action begins with women's first round play as Colorado meets South Alabama at 9 a.m. and UCLA faces Western Michigan at Noon. The Men's Regional Final follows at 3 p.m.
