Softball Cruises at Fresno State Classic

FRESNO, Calif. - The top-ranked UCLA softball (21-0) team picked up two victories Friday, knocking off Long Beach State 7-1 and No. 19 Oregon State 7-3, in the second day of competition at the 1999 Fresno State Softball Classic.
The Bruins opened the day against Long Beach State, a team they recently swept 6-1 and 7-0 last Sunday in Long Beach. Friday proved to be no different as the Bruins opened up the scoreless game in the bottom of the third inning, when center fielder Christie Ambrosi tripled, scoring Crissy Buck from second base. UCLA would add four more runs, finishing the inning with five runs on five hits, including one 49er error.
Up 6-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, Bruin catcher Stacey Nuveman notched an RBI single, giving UCLA a 7-1 advantage. Pitcher Courtney Dale struck out eight 49er batters, giving up five hits and one earned run en route to her 10th victory of the season.
Similar to its game against Long Beach, UCLA capitalized on one big inning, this time the fourth, to overpower No. 19 Oregon State. Nuveman, much like she has done all season, took control, blasting her 13th home run of the year, a grand slam, off OSU starter Tarrah Beyster. The Bruins went on to score seven runs in that inning. OSU would cut the lead to 7-3, however Bruin pitcher Amanda Freed was just too strong, picking up her 10th victory of the season. In addition, Freed also finished 2-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and an RBI.
The Bruins, who opened the classic Thursday with a 1-0 defeat of No. 6 DePaul, continue action Saturday, facing Creighton at 9:00 a.m. and Missouri at 5:00 p.m. UCLA rounds out the classic with No. 3 Fresno State on Sunday at 3:00 p.m.
