LONG BEACH, Calif. - UCLA catcher Stacey Nuveman became the Bruins' all-time leading home run hitter Sunday, as she smashed a pair of round-trippers and led UCLA (18-0) to a doubleheader sweep of No. 13 Long Beach State, 6-1 and 7-0.
Nuveman, a sophomore from La Verne, hit her 11th and 12th home runs of the season in game one, giving her 32 for her career at UCLA, topping the record held by Kim Wuest, who hit 30 homers from 1995-98. Nuveman was 2-for-2 in game one, with three RBI and a walk. She was 1-3 in game two with a double.
Bruin pitcher Courtney Dale threw a one-hitter in the opener, improving to 8-0 on the season.
In game two, Long Beach (6-6) could only manage three hits off Bruin starter Amanda Freed, and the 49ers gave up three unearned runs in the fifth inning to break open what had been a 1-0 game. Freed improved to 9-0 on the year with the victory.
Bruin first baseman Julie Marshall hit her sixth home run of the year in the fifth innning, a two-run shot, and finished with three RBI for the game. UCLA right fielder Lupe Brambila went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored.
The game was played before 750 fans at the 49er Softball Complex, the largest crowd in the four-year history of the facility.
The same two teams will square off again next Friday, March 5, at the Fresno State Softball Classic.
