Softball Downs Texas Tech, Florida State at Hallowell Chevrolet Classic

FRESNO, Calif. - The UCLA softball team improved its Hallowell Chevrolet Classic tournament record to 3-0 on Friday, downing Texas Tech by a 7-0 margin before defeating Florida State, 2-0. With the victories, the third-ranked Bruins improve to 24-3.
In the day's opener, the Bruins scored their first two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning with singles by Julie Marshall and Julie Adams followed by a two-RBI triple by Toria Auelua. The remainder of UCLA's runs came in the bottom of the fifth inning, when Marshall and Adams hit back-to-back home runs. Marshall's homer to left field was a grand slam, the second slam by a Bruin this season.
Stephanie Swenson earned her seventh victory of the season with the win, striking out three. The Bruin offense accumulated 11 hits in the game
Against the Lady Seminoles, UCLA scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning, when Natasha Watley singled, was sacrificed to second by Amanda Freed and scored on an RBI single by Lyndsey Klein. Klein stole second and advanced to third on a long fly ball hit by Marshall before Adams responded with an RBI single to right field.
In the game, Freed earned her 10th victory of the season and set a new Hallowell Chevrolet Classic tournament record with 13 strikeouts. The previous record was 11, a mark that Freed had tied in Thursday's game against Cal Poly.
The Bruins will have a long day on Saturday, as they open at 9 a.m. against Mississippi and return to Bulldog Diamond for a 5 p.m. first pitch against Illinois State. The Hallowell Chevrolet Classic will conlclude on Sunday with UCLA's 3 p.m. game against host Fresno State.
