STANFORD, Calif. - Lupe Brambila led off the sixth inning with a triple and scored on Lyndsey Klein's sacrifice fly to lead No. 3 UCLA to a 1-0 win over No. 8 Stanford at the Stanford Softball Complex Saturday afternoon. The Bruins improve to 27-5 on the year and 2-0 in the Pac-10 while the Cardinal falls to 30-6, 1-3.
Stanford out-hit the Bruins 7-5 and threatened on numerous occasions, but was unable to score. Stephanie Swenson (8-0) struck out six, scattering seven hits and two walks for the complete-game win.
Brambila hit a triple to the wall in right-center to lead off the sixth, and Sorensen was replaced by freshman Tori Nyberg. Nyberg got a lineout, but then gave up Klein's sacrifice fly to center field. Nyberg retired the first five batters she faced before hitting two consecutive batters with two out in the seventh. Nyberg then closed the game out when Casey Hiraiwa singled, but Auelua was caught in a rundown between third and home.
Stanford's best chance came in the fourth. Sophomore walked lead off the inning, and senior Lauren Gellman pinch-ran for her. Freshman Kira Ching singled to center, but Gellman was thrown out trying to advance to third. Ching took second base during the play on Gellman, then moved to third when freshman Maureen LeCocq singled. Shideler then put a sacrifice bunt down, but Swenson's throw home barely beat Ching for the second out. Swenson then struck out right fielder Cassi Brangham for the third and final out of the inning.
Stanford and UCLA return to the Stanford Softball Complex Sunday afternoon at1:00 p.m.
