HONOLULU, HI - The top-ranked UCLA Bruins made quick work of the Iowa Hawkeyes on Friday night in the opening match of the Hawaiian Airlines Rainbow Wahine Classic, turning in a 15-3, 15-9, 15-3 win. UCLA improves to 2-1 on the young 2000 season, while Iowa falls to 0-1.
In the first game of the match, the Bruins cruised to an easy 15-3 victory. Junior outside hitter Kristee Porter led the way for UCLA, hitting .500 with five kills on eight swings. Also notable was freshman defensive specialist, who recorded four of UCLA's six service aces in the game. As a team, the Bruins hit .444 to Iowa's .172 in the first game.
The Hawkeyes kept it closer in the second game of the match, keeping the game tied to the 6-6 mark. From there, the Bruins started to pull away, eventually winning the game 15-9.
Head coach Andy Banachowski made a few changes in the third game, coming out with freshman Krystal McFarland in place of sophomore Lauren Fendrick. As the Bruins pulled away to an eventual 15-3 game win, sophomore Lauren Hogan and freshman Alyssa Rylander also saw court time. The Bruins rebounded to record a .419 attack percentage in the third and deciding game, and capitalized on a -.125 performance by the Hawkeyes. Iowa finished with a .101 team hitting percentage for the match.
"We were a little flat in practice this week," said Banachowski, "so it was good to see us come out and get a 3-0 win tonight. I was particularly happy with our serving, as we finished with more aces than errors."
UCLA did in fact finish the match with nine aces as opposed to eight service errors, the first time this season that the team had a positive aces-to-errors ratio. Porter posted a team-high 17 kills and a .406 attack percentage, while Ashley Bowles and Elisabeth Bachman also posted double-figure kills with 11 and 10, respectively. Bachman also turned in a .450 performance with 20 attacks and one error on the night. Porter led the way on the block for UCLA with two solos and one assist, while Fendrick was the team's top digger with 10.
The Bruins have an off day on Saturday, and resume play at the Hawaiian Airlines Classic on Sunday, Sept. 3, when they face off against No. 19 Texas A&M. Tournament play will conclude on Monday, Sept. 4, when UCLA plays the tournament host school, No. 5 Hawaii.
