Softball Starts UNLV Classic With Two Run-Rule Wins

LAS VEGAS - The top-ranked UCLA softball team made quick work of both opponents at the UNLV Classic on Friday, defeating Portland State 20-0 and Kansas 15-1 in the first day of tournament play. Both games were shortened to five innings by the mercy rule.

In the opening game of the day, the Bruins scored 20 runs on 15 hits and one error, while the Vikings were scoreless on one hit with two errors. Three Bruins homered in the contest, freshman Marcel Torres, sophomore Tairia Mims and junior Stacey Nuveman. Mims and Nuveman accounted for five RBIs apiece in the game.

Against Kansas, UCLA scored its 15 runs on 16 hits with one error, allowing the Jayhawks one run on two hits and three errors. Amanda Freed pitched all five innings in the win. She struck out eight and walked one while allowing her first run of the year. Extra-base hits in the win went to Nuveman with a double, Courtney Dale went 2-for-3 with a double. Natasha Watley went 4-for-5 with two steals, while Claire Sua was 3-for-3 with three RBI.

The Bruins return to action on Saturday with games against Wisconsin and No. 12 Nebraska. UCLA closes tournament play on Sunday with a game against Florida International.
