Box Score

CORVALLIS, OR - The top-ranked UCLA softball team lost, 2-1, to No. 16 Oregon State on Friday, the day the Beavers held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for their brand-new OSU Softball Complex. With the loss, the Bruins fall to 42-4 (5-4 Pac-10), while the Beavers improve to 34-15-1 (3-4 Pac-10).

Neither team scored until the Beavers put up two unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth inning on a two-out RBI single by second baseman Clare Burnam. UCLA answered with one run in the top of the sixth inning, when shortstop Natasha Watley led off with a single to centerfield, and scored from second base on a long single by third baseman Tairia Mims. Mims was thrown out at second base trying to stretch the single for the second out of the inning and catcher Stacey Nuveman struck out to end the inning.

The Bruins were only able to post a bunt single by second baseman Crissy Buck in the top of the sixth inning, and were unable to tie the score to force extra innings.

Freshman Keira Goerl took the loss for the Bruins, her first loss of the season as she now has a record of 16-1. She struck out seven and did not allow a walk while scattering five hits on the afternoon.

The Bruins return to action on Saturday afternoon in Eugene, OR, with a 2 pm first pitch against the Oregon Ducks.
