Bruins Impressive in 7-0 Decision Over UNLV

Los Angeles - In a tune up for the Bruins' rivalry match with No. 12 USC this Friday, the third-ranked UCLA men's tennis team registered a 7-0 decision over visiting UNLV Tuesday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the victory, the Bruins improve to 3-0 on the year, while UNLV, which was playing its season opener Tuesday, falls to 0-1.
UCLA started the day by claiming the one point awarded for doubles play, however the Bruins were forced to come from behind in two of the three matches. No. 1 ranked Marcin Matkowski / Jean-Julien Rojer won their match without too much trouble, recording an 8-4 victory over Romain Tug/Thomas Michaud in the No. 1 spot. In the No. 3 doubles position, UCLA's Alberto Francis / Lassi Ketola rallied from 2-5 down to come back and win 8-6. In the No. 2 position, UCLA's Erfan Djahangiri / Rodrigo Grilli were also forced to come from behind, winning 9-8(6) in a highly contested tie breaker.
In singles play, Matkowski cruised to a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Thomas Schneiter at No. 1 singles. He avenged a 6-1, 6-1 loss to Schneiter two weeks ago at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic in Las Vegas.
At the No. 3 position, Grilli battled back from a set down to knock off Avirim Saloman, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4. Bruin sophomore Tobias Clemens, who did not play doubles Tuesday, made quick work of Michaud at No. 4 singles, winning 6-2, 6-4 in the quickest match of the afternoon.
Other Bruins notching singles victories included Rojer, Djahangiri and Ketola.
The Bruins return to the court this Friday to host the Trojans at the LATC beginning at 1:30 p.m.
