The top-ranked UCLA men's golf team split a pair of match play competitions Friday at the Collegiate Match Play Championships at the Barefoot Resort in Myrtle Beach, SC.
In their first match, the second-seeded Bruins were upset 4-1 by 15th seeded North Carolina State. The Bruins rebounded in the consolation bracket by beating Wake Forest 3-1-1 in the afternoon.
Against N.C. State, UCLA senior Roy Moon was the only bright spot as he defeated Stephen Lewton 2 and 1. Steve Conway, John Merrick, Travis Johnson and John Poucher all lost sending the Bruins into the consolation bracket.
Against Wake Forest, Conway picked up a key tie with Bill Haas, the nation's fourth-ranked player. Merrick won 2 and 1 over Kyle Reifers, Poucher defeated Chad Wilcox, 4 and 2 and Johnson won 3 and 2 against Doug Manchester. Moon lost 5 and 3 to Sean Moore.
On Saturday in the consolation semifinals, the Bruins will meet the winner of the Auburn-Arizona State match, which was suspended because of darkness. The tournament concludes on Sunday.
