
UCLA Wins NCAA South Central Regional, Advances To NCAA Championships

Columbia, Mo. - The top-ranked UCLA gymnastics team placed first at the NCAA South Central Regional at the University of Missouri's Hearnes Center Saturday night in front of 2,194 fans. UCLA totaled a 197.7 to qualify for the NCAA Championships, along with Iowa, which overtook Oregon State in the final rotation for second place, .025 ahead of the Beavers.
The Bruins started the meet incredibly strong, earning a 49.575 on the floor exercise. UCLA was impressive from start to finish. Junior Jeanette Antolin received an impressive leadoff score of 9.9 on a routine that featured a whip to immediate double pike opening pass, a 2.5 twist-immediate punch front, and a double pike dismount. Senior Kristin Parker added a 9.9 of her own, tumbling an Arabian double front mount and a double pike dismount. Senior Malia Jones and freshman Kate Richardson followed with a 9.85 and 9.8, respectively. Senior Onnie Willis continued to provide strong marks, earning a 9.925 for her high-powered routine. Junior Jamie Dantzscher, in her first meet in over a month, showed no signs of rust, recording her school-record tying 10th perfect 10 this year and 27th of her career. She also improved her unbeaten streak on floor to 19 consecutive meets.
On vault in the next rotation, the Bruins scored a 49.15, the highest vault total of the evening. Richardson and Dantzscher led the Bruins with scores of 9.875. Willis added a 9.85, and Antolin contributed a 9.825.
Leading all teams after two events with a total of 98.725, a little under one point ahead of second-place Oregon State, the Bruins moved to the uneven bars. Parker led off with a 9.85 and was followed by Willis' 9.875. Antolin posted a 9.925, Tousek added a 9.9, and Dantzscher closed with a 9.95, to give the Bruins a final team total of 49.5 and a three-event score of 148.225.
Holding a comfortable lead heading into the final rotation, the Bruins moved to the balance beam to close the competition. UCLA needed to score just 47.65 to finish in the Top 2 and proceeded to total a 49.5. Antolin once again led off the rotation with a 9.9. Dantzscher followed with a career-high tying 9.925. Jones and Willis scored 9.875 and 9.85, respectively, Richardson also scored a 9.925, and Tousek closed the Bruins' meet with a 9.85.
At the conclusion of the meet, Antolin was announced as the West Region Gymnast of the Year.
