LOS ANGELES - The seventh-ranked UCLA women's tennis team picked up its second conference win in as many days Saturday, defeating Washington State, 6-1 at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. With the win, the Bruins improve to 15-6 overall and 5-1 in Pac-10 play. The Cougars drop to 5-14 overall and 1-6 in conference action.
The Bruins jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after sweeping all three doubles matches to claim the one point awarded for doubles play.
In singles action, Bruin freshman Daniela Bercek, playing her first-ever match at the No. 1 position, defeated Lorena Arias, 6-3, 6-4. At the No. 2 position, sophomore Jackie Carleton won in three sets, defeating Orsolya Sallai, 7-6, 1-6, 6-2.
The Cougars picked up their only win of the day at the No. 3 position, where Nora Gaal defeated UCLA's Feriel Esseghir, 6-0, 6-4.
Led by straight set winner Laura Gordon, the bottom half of the Bruin lineup took care of business. Gordon defeated Amy Toth, 6-0, 6-2 at the No. 5 position, while Sarah Gregg at No. 4 and Nina Yaftali at No. 5 both won in three sets.
The Bruins round out the regular season at home next week, hosting top-ranked Stanford on Friday at 1:30 p.m. and No. 11 Cal on Saturday at Noon.
