LOS ANGELES - A day after beating No. 18 Stanford 4-3, the fourth-ranked UCLA men's tennis team made it a clean sweep over the Bay Area schools, registering a 7-0 victory over No. 30 Cal on Saturday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center. The win moves UCLA to 12-1 on the year, while the Golden Bears fall to 4-4. Neither of this weekend's matches counted in the Pac-10 standings.
Unlike their match with the Cardinal on Friday, the Bruins were able to claim the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead into singles following victories on court Nos. 2 and 3. Cal posted a win at the No. 1 doubles position.
Once singles play began, UCLA jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the match when 10th-ranked Benjamin Kohlloeffel and Chris Lam each recorded straight-set wins. Kohlloeffel defeated fellow German Lennart Maack, 6-2, 6-1 at court No. 2. Lam was a 6-1, 6-1 winner over Daniel Sebescen back on court No. 4.
The match was clinched at court No. 5, where 89th-ranked Alberto Francis posted a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Tyler Browne.
With the match already decided, three other Bruin players posted singles wins Saturday. In the featured match of the day at court No. 1, 12th-ranked Luben Pampoulov was a 6-3, 6-2 winner of 16th-ranked Conor Niland. Both No. 65 Philipp Gruendler and No. 42 Kris Kwinta battled back for victories after losing the first set. Gruendler defeated Ken Nakahara, 3-6, 6-3, 6-0 at court No. 6, while Kwinta knocked off Patrick Briaud, 5-7, 6-3, (10-5) at court No. 3. A 10-point tiebreaker was played in place of a third set in that match.
The Bruins return to action this Tuesday, taking on 11th-ranked USC at the Marks Tennis Stadium beginning at 1:30 p.m. The match is being made up after being postponed due to rain on Feb. 11.
