Wind Blows Bruins 23 Strokes Behind Leaders

The top-ranked UCLA women's golf team suffered through one of the worst rounds in its history Tuesday as high winds blew their scores nearly out of contention at the Arizona Wildcat Invitational.

The Bruins began the second round just one stroke out of first place, but after the outward nine they had fallen out of the Top 10. The good news? The rest of the field played in the same conditions and no team fared better than 14-over par. In fact, only one team, first-place Oklahoma State, broke the 300-barrier.

At the end of the day, Oklahoma State lost the least amount of blood, posting a second round score of 298 (+14) for a 36-hole total of 586 (+18). The Bruins, who posted a score of 321 (+37) on Tuesday, were tied for eighth place at 609 (+41). Only one other school, Vanderbilt (328, +44), recorded a worse 18-hole score. Duke was second at 590 (+22), followed by Arizona and USC at 596 (+28). Arizona State was fifth at 603 (+38).

For the Bruins, only sophomore Sydnee Michaels broke 80. And she needed an eagle on the par 5 18th for her 77 (+5). She was tied for 19th at eight-over par 150 with teammate Tiffany Joh, who posted an 80 (+8) on Tuesday. After carding a nine on the par 5 second hole, Joh played the rest of her round in four-over par and posted a 37 (+1) on the inward nine with a birdie at No. 16.

Freshman Glory Yang, tied for third at the beginning of the day, posted an 82 (+11) in the second round and was tied for 28th at 152 (+10). Junior Ryann O'Toole and freshman Maria Jose Uribe also posted 82s, and were tied for 56th and 72nd, respectively.

Final round action continues on Wednesday.
