Selden Fans 14 as Fourth-Ranked Bruins Beat James Madison

SAN DIEGO - Senior Anjelica Selden struck out 14, including the last 12 of the game, as the fourth-ranked Bruins defeated James Madison 8-0 in five innings on Friday at the San Diego Classic. Senior Krista Colburn added a 3-for-3 effort, while junior Amanda Kamekona went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
The Bruins improve to 15-2 with their ninth straight victory and will face San Diego at 4:30 p.m. James Madison falls to 6-3 with the loss.
UCLA scored a pair in the bottom of the first inning to improve to 13-0 when scoring in its first at-bat. With two outs, Colburn singled up the middle and advanced to second on a fielding error by James Madison shortstop Melissa Hill which allowed freshman GiOnna DiSalvatore to reach first. Sophomore Megan Langenfeld followed with a grounder to Hill, who booted it and then threw it into right field for two errors on the play, as Colburn and DiSalvatore both came home to put the Bruins up 2-0.
In the third, the Bruins posted three straight singles to start the inning to make it 3-0. Kamekona singled up the middle, Colburn singled to shortstop and DiSalvatore had a base knock up the middle to drive in the run.
UCLA busted the game open with five in the fourth to invoke the mercy-rule. Junior Jennifer Schroeder singled up the middle and was pinch-run for by freshman Lauren Mirabal, who stole second and moved to third on a fielding error by second baseman Kaitlyn Wernsing with sophomore Julie Burney reaching first. Freshman Monica Harrison then bounced a ball back to the circle, but Mirabal was chased back to third, Burney took second and Harrison reached first safely to load the bases.
After the Dukes got the first out of the inning on a strikeout, Kamekona singled up the middle to plate Mirabal and Burney to make it 5-0 and when center fielder Courtney Simons misplayed the ball, Harrison also came in to score with Kamekona advancing to third. Colburn followed with a smash off the pitcher which scored Kamekona to put UCLA ahead 7-0. One out later, Langenfeld walked to move Colburn to second and freshman Samantha Camuso drove Colburn in with a single up the middle to make it 8-0.
After setting a new career high for strikeouts in a seven-inning game with 17 against Northwestern last Sunday at the Palm Springs Classic, Selden's 14 punchouts against James Madison marked a personal best for a five-inning contest. Selden (8-1) had a part in all 15 outs, also fielding a comebacker to end the first inning for one of the two balls James Madison put into play. The Dukes' lone hit was a leadoff single by Shannon Moxey.
Jenny Clohan started for the Dukes and gave up just two earned runs (seven total) and seven hits in 3 1/3 innings with four strikeouts. Shannon Outman tossed the final 2/3 of an inning, allowing an unearned run, two hits and a walk with one strikeout.
