A long, cold, wet and windy day ended in runner-up finishes for the UCLA women's golf team Friday at the 27th NCAA Championship, hosted by the University of New Mexico at its Championship Course in Albuquerque.

First, the Bruins were bridesmaids to USC for the team title then junior Tiffany Joh lost in a playoff for the individual crown.

The Bruins began the final round three strokes behind the Trojans, and played a courageous round of four-over par in miserable conditions. USC won its second national championship in five years by posting a fine one-over par score of 289 for a 72-hole total of 1,168 (+16). The Bruins finished six strokes back at 1,174 (+22). Three-time defending champion Duke made a surprising climb up the leaderboard to capture third at 1,180 (+28) and posted the day's best score, 281 (-7). Purdue was fourth at 1,188 (+36) and Arizona State took fifth at 1,189 (+37).

The turning point for Joh came at the 17th hole, which she bogeyed to drop into a tie for the individual lead with Arizona State's Azahara Munoz at one-under par for the championship. Both players made par at the 18th and remained tied at one-under 287 after 72 holes. At the first playoff hole, Joh left a putt to tie Munoz short.

Sophomore Sydnee Michaels tied for eighth at 292 (+4) following a final round score of 74 (+2). Freshman Glory Yang tied for 15th place at 295 (+7) following a fine round of even par 72. Freshman Maria Jose Uribe posted a 74 (+2) and tied for 41st at 301 (+13) and junior Maiya Tanaka tied for 75th at 308 (+20) following a final round score of 78 (+6).
