NCAA Super Regional - Game 1 Quotes
Georgia Head Coach Lu Harris-Champer
(on the errors) "I just think it happens. It's part of the game and you have to deal with it and handle it and move on from it."
(on the number of walks by Christie Hamilton) "She just had a lot today. I think she knows the adjustments she needs to make and she'll get another opportunity."
(on tomorrow's game) "I think we just have to come out and play our game. Things weren't quite in rhythm for us today and tomorrow we'll come out and compete in our rhythm."
(on the crowd) "I thought the crowd made it fun. We're used to playing in large crowds in many SEC games. It makes the game more exciting."
Georgia Freshman Infielder Megan Wiggins
(on her home run) "It was very exciting as usual, but I just took the pitch. We've been doing a lot of drills. Just doing what I've been working on."
(on facing UCLA pitcher Anjelica Selden) "I think we were as ready as we could have been. We were just going out there aggressive like we always are."
(on how they will approach tomorrow) "We are going to come out strong, just like we did today, and play our best like we always do."
UCLA Head Coach Kelly Inouye-Perez
(opening statement) "I am just very proud of the way the team came out and fought today. Our goal was to be able to have seven mini-battles and not to sit on any one inning, whether it is good or bad. I couldn't be any more proud of how they came out and responded, but it's always great to be able to follow the lead of Jelly, who got a knock off her in that first inning and then bounced back and completely shut them down. That builds confidence for this team. As you can see, the story of this season has been there isn't one person that is the "go-to". There are a lot of different Bruins who can strike at any time and today, Megan Langenfeld was the one that got the game-winner early in the ball game."
(on Megan Langenfeld) "What makes Megan Langenfeld so good is her ability to have such a great eye. She has such a great presence about her at the plate, that it's impressive to see how she carries herself in the box. She can hit to both sides of the field and it's a great confidence builder. It is something that she has done all year."
(on Anjelica Selden) "I've been able to be a part of this program and see the pitchers that have come through. What she (Selden) has done in her four years, not just in the strikeout column, but what she has accomplished from her freshman year to this year shows that she's left her mark on a program that has had the best pitchers come through. To see her finish out on this note truly represents her hard work, how much she's grown, how much she's learned from herself and the sport and it's typical that she doesn't focus on those things. It's a big part of what makes her so great."
(on the team) "I challenged them in the beginning to expect for it to be hard. If you do that, you're prepared and you don't get caught off guard. If things go well, then we know what that feels like, but you prepare for it to be hard so we are more prepared for that adversity. So when that first home run gets hit, the shock value isn't there. We realize that we have to get on the board anyway and it's early in the ball game, so you saw a team (UCLA) that was un-phased. I believe we are building momentum because we've won so many different ways and so many people have been able to step up and be the one. That builds confidence as a team."
(on the crowd) "It's great to be at home and we have a lot of support here. We definitely heard them in the seventh inning."
UCLA Sophomore Designated Player Megan Langenfeld
(on the game) "From the first inning on, we noticed the umpire had a pretty tight zone. We wanted to make the pitcher work even harder. The more pitches she threw, the more tired she got."
(on the pitch she got for her first-inning double) "I was looking for a good pitch to hit and luckily it was just right there."
(on teammate Anjelica Selden) "I just learn a lot from her. You just watch her stay poised, even with the home run in the first inning and you knew that she was going to bounce back. Just being with her for the past two years, I've learned so much."
(on the crowd) "It's just fun to see everyone there. Even the Georgia fans, they kind of get you fired up too and with our fans, it's just a great atmosphere."
UCLA Senior Pitcher Anjelica Selden
(on getting her 1,400th strikeout) "I don't really like to pay attention to my stats, but it's an honor to be recognized among some of the best pitchers that have come through this program. I don't like for that to define me because it's a team sport and I'm doing everything that I can to keep the team confident."
(on the pitch that Wiggins' hit for a home run) "It wasn't the best pitch obviously. Sometimes you miss and you have to tip your cap when the batter takes advantage of that. We were able to get her the next couple of times."
(on the team rallying back with two runs in the bottom of the first) "It's always nice to have a little bit of a cushion. It's great that our team can manufacture runs like that so we can come back in a ball game. It's nice for a pitcher to have that offensive dominance just to stay confident."
(on having a big lead late in the game) "A big part of the game is mental. You can't get too relaxed when you have a huge cushion. My main goal throughout each inning is to maintain a good focus, so my head doesn't get too clotted with other thoughts. It's extremely important for myself to stay focused so I can continue to stay poised for my team."
