Freshman forward Victor Chavez provided all the offense UCLA needed, scoring a pair of goals in the first 14 minutes of the game to lead the 15th-ranked Bruins to a 2-1 win at Cal State Northridge.
Chavez's first goal came at 3:11 on a header after a long throw-in by Joe Sofia. He struck again at the 13:12 mark on a bicycle kick in the box. Kelyn Rowe started the play with a throw-in that found Reed Williams in the center of the box. Williams headed the ball to Chavez on the left side of the box, and Chavez left his feet to kick the ball over his head and into the goal.
Northridge cut UCLA's lead in half at 40:17 on a goal by Jeremy Hohn. Chris Smith's corner kick was punched out by UCLA goalkeeper Brian Rowe, and Hohn kicked the rebound in past Rowe for his first goal of the season.
UCLA nearly regained its two-goal advantage minutes later when Evan Raynr fired a close-range shot that was saved by CSUN goalkeeper Joe Scachetti one-handed.
Armed with a 2-1 lead at halftime, the Bruins tried to gain more breathing room in the second half. Raynr hit an on-target from distance in the 52nd minute that substitute goalkeeper Michael Abalos saved.
Rowe did his part to preserve UCLA's lead, making a career-high-tying eight saves in the second half, including a diving save to stop a shot to the right corner from going in during the 60th minute.
UCLA improves to 11-4-1, while Northridge drops to 2-12-2.
