Sophomore forward Chandler Hoffman scored the game's only goal in the 64th minute to lead UCLA to a 1-0 win over Washington Friday evening in Seattle.
Wet conditions led to a defensive first half, with UCLA tallying just five shots, including three on goal, while Washington had nine shots, only one of which was on goal. One of the Bruin shots on goal, by Andy Rose off a corner kick, was cleared off the line by a Washington player in the 13th minute.
After going into the half scoreless, the Bruins had a prime opportunity to score in the 51st minute when the Washington goalkeeper came out on a ball near the goal line, leaving an empty net for the Bruins. But Husky defender Jamie Finch cleared the ball out before any UCLA players could get to it to stop the threat.
The Bruins broke through with a score at 63:03 on Hoffman's goal after a quick restart after a Washington foul. Hoffman was sent a cross into the box and finished for his first goal after sitting out the first 11 games of the year with a leg injury. Shawn Singh and Eder Arreola were credited with assists.
UCLA's defense held tight for the remainder of the contest, giving the Bruins and goalkeeper Brian Rowe their eighth shutout of the year.
With the season sweep over the Huskies, UCLA improves its record to 12-4-1, 6-2-0 in the Pac-10. Washington drops to 9-6-1, 3-5-0. The Bruins resume conference play on Sunday at Oregon State.
