The No. 2 ranked UCLA women's golf team got off to a great start at the NCAA Women's Golf Championship by ending the first round with a two stroke lead over the competition.

The Bruins recorded an overall score of 289 (+1), giving them a two stroke lead over second place Virginia, who posted a score of 291 (+3). Purdue and LSU ended the day tied for third place at 292 (+4) while the Florida Gators rounded out the top five with a score of 294 (+6).

"We are very pleased with our start today," Head Coach Carrie Forsyth said. "The conditions were tough with gusty winds and some tucked pins. It was a great team effort but we know that it takes 4 good rounds to win, not just one. We are off to a nice start and look forward to playing well again tomorrow."

Individually, senior Glory Yang posted a 70 (-2) to finish round one in a tie for 2nd place, one shot back of the leader. Yang recorded three birdies and one bogey for her round and shot even par on the back nine to secure her second place finish on the day. Sophomore Tiffany Lua is just two shots off the lead after birdying the 18th and final hole of the day to giver her a 71 (-1) for her round, good for a tie for 5th place. Sophomore Lee Lopez recorded a 73 (+1) for her day to finish tied for 23rd. Junior Stephanie Kono shot a first round 75 (+3) to finish tied for 42nd place. Finally, freshman Ani Gulugian posted a 78 (+6) and is currently tied for 79th place.

Brittany Altomare of Virginia was the first round leader with a score of 69 (-3).
