
UCLA Assumes Opening Round Lead at CordeValle

Host UCLA assumed the first round lead at the eighth annual Gifford Collegiate Championship on Monday at CordeValle Country Club in San Martin, Calif.
The Bruins posted a team score of 350 (-5) in the six-count-five format, and held a three-shot lead over Stanford (353, -2). Tennessee was third at even par 355, followed by Coastal Carolina at 362 (+7). Tied for fifth were Northwestern and San Jose State at 363 (+8). SMU was seventh at 365 (+10), followed by USC at 366 (+11), Oregon State at 371 (+16) and Lamar at 373 (+18).
Individually, top UCLA honors went to senior Pontus Widegren, who posted a four-under par 68 and was tied for second place. Tied for fifth place were sophomores Manav Shah and Matt Pinizzotto after they carded scores of 69 (-2). Freshman Lorens Chan was tied for 13th after signing for a 71 (E). Senior Pedro Figueiredo was tied for 31st at 73 (+2) and freshman Jonathan Garrick was tied for 42nd following his round of 75 (+4).
Five other UCLA players competed as individuals, led by sophomore Jay Hwang, who fired a 68 (-3) and was tied for second with Widegren. Tied for ninth place was sophomore Preston Valder at 70 (-1) and tied for 13th place with Chan was freshman Jake Knapp at 71 (E). Freshman Reilly McMahon was tied for 42nd at 75 (+4) and freshman Aaron Kunitomo was tied for 71st following a round of 77 (+6).
Stanford's Cameron Wilson set a tournament record, firing a 10-under par 61 to take the first round lead.
