UCLA freshman Jake Knapp captured his first collegiate tournament title and the Bruins placed first and second individually at the Cal State San Marcos Invitational Tuesday at Shadowridge Country Club in Vista, CA.
Knapp, 19, posted a final round 73 (+1) and finished at 208 (-8), seven shots ahead of sophomore teammate Matt Pinizzotto, who was the runner-up at 215 (-1). Pinizzotto, who began the day in a tie for fourth place, fired a final round 69 (-3). Knapp began the day with a nine-shot lead over CSU San Marcos' Adam Loran, who posted a score of 78 (+6) on Tuesday and tied for eighth place.
Knapp's victory was the third individual title by a UCLA player this season. In October, senior Pontus Widegren won the CSU San Marcos Fall Invitational with a record-tying score of 198 (-18) and freshman Jonathan Garrick won the Cal Poly Invitational with a score of 201 (-9). Knapp's seven-under par score of 65 in Monday's second round helped vault him to the top of the leaderboard entering the final round. That score tied his collegiate best round. He also posted a 65 (-5) in the first round of the Cal Poly tournament and finished second to Garrick.
In other UCLA results at CSU San Marcos, freshman Reilly McMahon tied for 39th at 234 (+18) and sophomore Preston Valder finished 78th at 252 (+36).
Five other UCLA players will begin competition in the Amer Ani Invitational on Wednesday at the Waikoloa Kings Resort in Hawai'i.
