Bruins Make Final Push at Highlands, Finish 4th

The No. 2-ranked UCLA Men's Golf Team made a final push for contention at the Southern Highlands Masters in Las Vegas, NV on Sunday, as the seasoned veteran group improved upon the previous two days' score by three strokes to shoot 288 (E) as a team. It wouldn't be enough to catch #1 California, however, as the Bruins finished at 870 (+6) for fourth place, a single stroke behind #6 Alabama and #5 New Mexico in second. The Golden Bears ran away with it, finishing at 856 (-8), thirteen strokes ahead of the next competitor.
The UCLA team of five saw varied results on the final day, but were mostly improved: Senior Pontus Widegren birdied his last hole on 18 to shoot 70 (-2) to lead the Bruins and post his lowest score of the competition, finishing 11th individually. Sophomore Jonathan Garrick both carded a 72 (E), and Pedro Figueiredo rounded things out for UCLA with a 78 (+6), finishing 25th individually in a tie with teammate Shah and four other players.
The Bruins will be encouraged by their showing. The Southern Highlands featured one of the most difficult fields UCLA will see all year, and may act as a preview of the National Championship, with nine of the top ten teams in the country competing and 12 of the top 15. UCLA will be back in action March 25th, at the Anteater Invitational in Irvine, CA.
