LOS ANGELES - The 21st-ranked Bruins had the top marks in 15 of Saturday's 16 events, as UCLA defeated Arizona State 169-124 in a Pac-12 dual meet at Spieker Aquatics Center.
Both relays went to the Bruins, who are now 4-1 in dual meets, while two-time individual winners included junior Katy Campbell, sophomore Linnea Mack and freshman Maria Polyakova. The first event of the afternoon, the 200 Medley Relay, went to the Bruins, as the quartet of juniors Katie Kinnear and Allison Wine, Mack and senior Monica Dornick had a meet-record time of 1:42.01.
Thanks to a break between events two and three, the 1000 Freestyle and 200 Free, due to Arizona State men's swimming getting some reps in, Campbell was able to pull off the rare 1000-200 Free double. The junior posted a 9:58.17 to lead a 1-3-4 finish for the Bruins, as sophomore Hayden Walker was third (10:29.48) and junior Shannon Cheung fourth (10:47.99). Campbell then was first in the 200 Free with a time of 1:49.39. Freshman Carly Reid tied for the second-best time (1:50.95), while sophomore Madison White was fourth (1:51.46).
Mack posted her second NCAA 'B' qualifying time of the year in the 100 Backstroke with a 54.35. The fourth-best (Natalie Amberg, 58.14) and fifth-best (Hannah Grubbs, 58.86) times went to a pair of Bruin freshmen. Arizona State won its lone race of the meet in the 100 Breaststroke. Wine was third (1:05.13), while senior Taylor Carlson placed fifth (1:06.29).
The Bruins got back on the winning track in each of the next two events before the first swimming break. UCLA had the top five times in the 200 Butterfly, led by senior Noelle Tarazona's 2:00.36. That was followed by freshman Katie Grover (2:00.77), Kinnear (2:01.20), junior Arlyn Upshaw (2:04.35) and freshman Marie-Pierre Delisle (2:04.88). In the 50 Free, Mack set a meet record in picking up her second win of the afternoon with a 23.13. Dornick was third (23.59).
Polyakova recorded the first of her two victories in the 3-Meter diving event, scoring a six-dive total of 328.05. Sophomore Annika Lenz was third (301.65), setting an NCAA Zone Championships qualification score. Rounding out the Bruin quintet were freshman Ciara Monahan (258.08), junior Montana Monahan (227.40) and sophomore Danni Repper (190.58).
Out of the swimming break, Dornick claimed the 100 Free with a time of 50.40. Freshman Sarah Kaunitz (52.18) had the fourth-best mark, while junior Madison Applegate was fifth (52.28). In the 200 Back, White was first with a time of 2:00.02, with sophomore Nina Hayes posting the fifth-best mark (2:09.32). In the 200 Breast, senior Jessica Khojasteh won with a time of 2:17.12, while Carlson was fourth (2:23.53).
Sophomore Michaela Merlihan was triumphant in the 500 Free with a time of 4:57.84. Senior Ally Loper was fourth (5:01.81) and Amberg placed fifth (5:08.24). Grover (55.42) out-touched Kinnear (55.49) to win the 100 Fly, while freshman Anna Quinn had the fourth-best time (56.78).
Polyakova finished off a 3-for-4 weekend with a 1-Meter victory. The freshman had a six-dive total of 308.40, while Lenz was third (284.40). Ciara Monahan qualified for the NCAA Zones with a score of 274.28 to place fourth. Repper was fifth (232.28), followed by Montana Monahan (210.98).
The Bruin swimmers finished up the meet with a win in the 400 Individual Medley and the 400 Free Relay, as the Bruins had the top two times in the IM with Upshaw (4:23.42) and Tarazona (4:23.60). Freshman MK Kish posted the fourth-best time (4:28.64), while Campbell was fifth (4:29.16). The Bruins had a 1-3 finish in the 400 Free Relay. Mack, White, Grover and Dornick had the best time with a 3:22.44, while Khojasteh, Kinnear, Quinn and Kaunitz were third (3:29.85).
The Bruin swimmers head to next weekend's A3 Performance Invitational at East Los Angeles College in Monterey Park to be held Thursday, Nov. 20 through Saturday, Nov. 22.
