FULLERTON, Calif. - Freshman Olga Strantzali had a season-best 17 kills to go with eight digs, while sophomore Claire Felix added 11 kills, as the 22nd-ranked Bruins swept Georgetown on Friday at the Fullerton Classic. Set scores were 25-16, 26-24, 25-18.
The Bruins (7-2) hit .330 for the match, their 48th-straight win when posting at least a .300 hitting percentage. Felix committed just one error in 15 attempts for a career-best .667 percentage, Strantzali hit .355 and sophomore Izzy Carmona was error-free, with six kills in 14 swings (.429).
Senior Julie Consani recorded 38 assists, four digs and four blocks. Sophomore Taylor Formico paced UCLA with 10 digs, junior Karly Drolson added eight and sophomore Jennie Frager tallied five kills and five blocks.
UCLA never trailed in the opening set. Tied at three, kills by Felix, Consani and freshman Reily Buechler put the Bruins up 6-3. After a Georgetown sideout, a Hoya attack error, a kill by junior Karsta Lowe and a combo block by Consani and Frager put the Bruins up by five at 9-4. The Hoyas would get no closer than two the rest of the way.
At 11-9, a 7-1 UCLA run on two kills each by Felix and Strantzali, a Lowe kill, a Frager ace and a Georgetown error made it 18-10. With the score 20-15, the Bruins posted a 5-1 run to end the set on a Hoya service error, a kill by Frager, who also teamed up with Buechler on a block, an ace by Drolson and a Carmona kill to wrap up a 25-16 victory. Felix paced the Bruins with four kills on no errors in five attempts in the opener, while Lowe added three. UCLA out-hit Georgetown .333 to -.105.
Set two was in the Hoyas' grasp, but the Bruins saved five set points and had an improbable comeback to win it. With the Bruins up 5-4, kills by Felix, Frager and Buechler put them up 8-4. Georgetown charged forward with a 12-4 run to take a 16-12 edge. The Bruins got back to within two at 21-19, but the Hoyas scored the next three to earn five set points.
The first two were saved on Strantzali kills, followed by a Hoya attack error. Continuing on the strong serving of junior Michaela Leonard, a Consani/Felix combo block and another GU attack error evened things at 24. The run ended as it began, with two straight Strantzali kills to close out an outstanding 26-24 victory. Strantzali paced the Bruins with seven kills, Felix added four and Buechler and Carmona recorded three apiece. The Bruins out-hit the Hoyas .275 to .059.
The Bruins led for all but one point in set three to finish off the sweep. Equal at three, a 6-1 UCLA run on three kills by Strantzali, a Felix kill, a Consani/Frager combo block and a Georgetown error made it 9-4. The Hoyas got back to within a pair, but could get no closer.
At 15-12, another 6-1 Bruin run on kills by Felix, Strantzali and junior Maddy Klineman, a Consani/Felix combo block and two Hoya errors put the Bruins on top by a set-best eight at 21-13. Leading 23-18, a Strantzali kill and a Frager/Klineman combo block on the first match point finished off a 25-18 victory. Strantzali had eight more kills in the third, while Felix added three. The Bruins out-hit the Hoyas .394 to .075.
