
Bruins Beat Beavers in Five

CORVALLIS, Ore. - Sophomore Reily Buechler tied a career high with 21 kills to go with six digs, freshman Zana Muno set personal bests with 52 assists and 24 digs and junior Taylor Formico notched a UCLA career-high 32 digs, as the 10th-ranked Bruins ran their winning streak to seven with a five-set victory at Oregon State on Sunday at Gill Coliseum. Set scores were 25-16, 25-21, 19-25, 23-25, 15-5.
The Bruins improve to 17-3 overall and 8-2 in Pac-12 play, while the Beavers fall to 4-16 and 2-8 in league action.
Junior Jordan Anderson recorded 12 kills and seven digs, junior Jennie Frager added 10 kills and eight blocks, redshirt junior Haley Lawless posted nine kills and four blocks and junior Claire Felix had eight kills and four blocks. Seniors Karly Drolson and Rachel Inouye both had double figures in digs with 14 and 11, respectively. The Bruins hit .186 for the match.
The Bruins led wire-to-wire in the opening set, scoring the first four points on kills by Anderson, Frager and Lawless and a Drolson ace. The Beavers cut their deficit to three on several occasions, but could get no closer. At 12-9, a Felix solo block and two OSU attack errors made it 15-9. After a Beaver sideout, a Felix kill, an Inouye ace, a Buechler kill and an OSU attack error extended the lead to a set-best nine at 19-10.
At 22-15, the Bruins scored three of the last four to win the first 25-16. A Lawless kill and a Frager/Lawless block gave the Bruins nine set points, and after a sideout, a Buechler kill wrapped up the nine-point win. Anderson led the Bruins with five kills and Buechler added four. In the digs department, Formico had nine, Muno six and Inouye posted five. The Bruins out-hit the Beavers .293 to .119.
The second set featured 14 ties and seven lead changes, but the Bruins rallied late to go up 2-0 in the match. Trailing 4-2, the Bruins scored four of five on kills by Lawless and Buechler and aces from Inouye and Buechler to go up 6-5, but Oregon State scored the next two to go ahead 7-6. UCLA regained the lead at 11-10 and still led 15-14 before OSU netted a 5-1 run to take a 19-16 edge.
Three straight for the Bruins on a service error, a Frager/Lawless block and an Anderson kill evened the score at 19. After OSU scored the next two, the Bruins closed the set with the last six on kills by Frager and Buechler, a Frager/Lawless block, another Buechler kill, an OSU attack error and yet another Buechler kill to win the second 25-21. Buechler led the way with seven kills, while Anderson added three. Formico and Muno each had six digs, while Frager and Lawless both had three blocks. The Bruins out-hit the Beavers .324 to .200.
UCLA held a few early three-point leads in the third, but Oregon State battled back to force another set. Trailing 2-1, the Bruins scored five of six on kills by Frager and Lawless, a Felix solo block, a Felix/Buechler roof and an OSU error. The Bruins still led by three at 11-8, but Oregon State netted seven of the next nine to take a 15-13 edge.
The Beavers didn't trail for the rest of the set, eventually winning the third by a score of 25-19. Frager led the Bruins with three kills. Formico added six digs, while Drolson posted four, as the Bruins were out-hit .189 to .000.
The Bruins maintained a lead until very late in the fourth when Oregon State came back to force a fifth set. UCLA took an early 8-3 lead thanks to five Buechler kills and a combo block with Felix, but the Beavers stormed back with four straight. At 11-10, UCLA responded with five in a row on two blocks by Frager and freshman Kyra Rogers, kills by Rogers and Buechler and an OSU attack error.
UCLA was only two points away from the match at 23-21, but Oregon State netted the last four of the fourth to win it 25-23. Buechler was tops on the team with seven kills, Frager had four blocks and Rogers added three. Formico notched nine digs, Muno had eight and Anderson posted five. The Bruins out-hit the Beavers .054 to .036.
The Bruins jumped on the Beavers from the start of the fifth set to finish up the win. Leading 4-3, UCLA scored six straight on three Anderson kills, a Formico ace and two Beaver attack errors. After a sideout, a Muno kill and ace and kills by Frager and Lawless gave the Bruins 10 match points. On attempt number two, a Lawless kill closed out the 15-5 win. Anderson and Lawless each had three kills in the fifth, as the Bruins out-hit the Beavers .615 to .056.
