Trailing 3-2, the Bruins scored seven straight on a Buechler kill, two in a row by Anderson, an ASU ball handling error, kills by Anderson and Felix and a Felix/Muno block to make it 9-3. After a sideout, kills by Anderson and Frager and an ASU attack error made it 12-4, as UCLA got its lead to a set-best nine at 15-6.
With the Bruins still up by nine at 21-12, the Sun Devils went on runs of 4-0 and 9-2 to cut their deficit to a pair at 23-21. Anderson paced the Bruins with eight kills, Frager added four and Buechler posted three. Formico recorded eight digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Sun Devils .286 to .081.
UCLA again held a lead in the second, but Arizona State again made a late run and this time held on to win the set and even the match. Down 5-2, the Bruins scored three straight on an ASU attack error, a solo block by Anderson and an ace from Buechler. Trailing 8-7, kills by Lawless and Buechler and a Sun Devil error put the Bruins ahead 10-8. UCLA's lead got as high as four at 16-12 and 17-13, as a 4-1 run came on three Anderson kills and one by Felix.
The Sun Devils responded with eight in a row to go ahead 21-17, but the Bruins didn't quit, scoring five of the next six on kills by Anderson and Buechler, a Frager solo roof and two ASU errors to even things at 22. However, the Sun Devils scored the last three of the set to win it 25-22. Anderson was tops in the set with five kills, while Buechler and Felix each posted three. The Bruins trailed for most of the fourth set before coming back late to win. UCLA was down by as many as five on three occasions. At 22-18, the Bruins improbably went on a 6-1 run to earn a set point. The run began with a Lawless kill and a Drolson ace, and after a sideout, kills by Lawless and Ngauamo and two ASU attack errors made it 24-23. ASU saved the first set point, but a Lawless kill made it 25-24.
After a second saved set point by the home team, a Felix kill gave the Bruins a third try, but ASU made it 26-all. Another Felix kill gave the Bruins a fourth set point, and it was the charm, as a Sun Devil attack error forced a fifth set. Anderson, Felix and Lawless each had five kills in the fourth, while Ngauamo added three, as the Bruins out-hit ASU .214 to .200. Formico recorded five digs.
After falling behind 3-2 in the fifth, a Lawless kill and a kill and solo block by Ngauamo put the Bruins up 5-3. Despite ties at 5, 6 and 8-all, the Bruins didn't trail for the rest of the set. Kills by Felix and Anderson and a Muno solo block made it 11-8. After a sideout, an Anderson kill, a Frager/Lawless block and a Muno ace gave the Bruins five match points. On the second attempt, a Lawless kill wrapped up the 15-10 victory.
