Madey First After Day One of Gifford

CARLSBAD, Calif. - Freshman Cole Madey shot a 4-under par 67 on the first day of the Gifford Collegiate at the La Costa Legends Course, posting an eagle and five birdies to take the tournament lead by one stroke through 18 holes. The Bruins are tied for third as a team (+3, 287), two shots back of Stanford and Washington and tied with Oregon.
Madey, who recorded the first under par round of his career, eagled the par-5 12th and also made birdies at #4, #5, #8, #15 and #17. The only blemishes on his scorecard were a bogey on the 16th and a double on the 10th.
Senior Jonathan Garrick is tied for 10th after the first round with an even-par 71. Birdies on holes #6, #8, #12 and #15 were countered with bogeys on the 16th and the 18th and a double on the third.
Senior Jake Knapp shot a 3-over 74 (T-35) with a trio of birdies on the second, seventh and 12th to go with four bogeys and a double bogey. Sophomore Corey Shaun is +4 (75) and tied for 45th after day one. Like Madey, he eagled the 12th, adding birdies on #4 and #6, but also posted six bogeys and a double. Freshman Patrick Murphy made birdies on the first, fourth, seventh, 11th and 12th, but also lost shots on seven holes, shooting a 7-over 78 (T-69).
Two Bruins played as individuals. Sophomore Brandon Mai shot a 4-over 75 (T-45) with birdies on #4, #13 and #15 to go with three bogeys and two doubles. Freshman Phil Delisi was +9 (80, 79th) with a birdie on the 12th, eight bogeys and a double.
The Bruins tee off the first hole at 8:55 a.m. on Tuesday in the order of Murphy, Shaun, Knapp, Garrick and Madey. Mai and Delisi go off the 10th at 10:05 and 10:16 a.m.
