#17 UCLA Drops Final Regular-Season Meet at #14 USC

LOS ANGELES - Freshman Maria Polyakova won both diving events, senior Noelle Tarazona led a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 Butterfly and junior Allison Wine set a new school record in the 100 Breaststroke on Friday at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center, but the 17th-ranked Bruins dropped a 174.5-125.5 decision to #14 USC.

In the opening 200 Medley Relay, the Bruin 'A' team of sophomore Linnea Mack, Wine, junior Katie Kinnear and senior Monica Dornick had an NCAA qualifying time of 1:37.70, finishing second in the race. The UCLA 'B' squad of sophomore Madison White and seniors Taylor Carlson, Tarazona and Jessica Khojasteh were third with a 1:39.67.

The Bruins recorded the second, third and fifth positions in the 1000 Freestyle. Junior Katy Campbell was second (9:49.47), followed by sophomores Michaela Merlihan (9:58.37) and Hayden Walker (10:07.51), the last two each setting career bests. In the 200 Free, Dornick swam the fifth-fastest time in school history with a 1:46.69, setting an NCAA 'B' qualifying time. She was second in the race, followed by senior Ally Loper (1:48.28) in fourth and freshman Carly Reid (1:49.19) in fifth. UCLA placed second and third in the 100 Backstroke, with White going 52.68 and Mack posting a 53.03.

Wine set a school record in the 100 Breast with a time of 59.70, besting the record previously held by Lindsay Etter (set in 1998) and Brittany Beauchan (2009), who each swam a 1:00.45. Wine was second in the race, followed by sophomore Brigitte Winkler (1:02.50) in third and Khojasteh (1:02.61) in fourth.

The Bruins posted their first swimming victory of the afternoon on the heels of a 1-2-3 finish in the 200 Butterfly. Tarazona improved on her NCAA 'B' qualifying time with a 1:55.20 to win the race, followed by freshman Katie Grover, who posted a 1:55.88. It was also an NCAA 'B' mark for Grover and was the sixth-fastest time in UCLA history. Kinnear placed third in the race with a 1:57.15, a career best and an NCAA 'B' time. In the final race before the first swim break, Mack was second in the 50 Free with a 22.53. Freshman Sarah Kaunitz was fourth (23.23) and senior Courtney Wilde fifth (23.56).

Polyakova won both of the diving events, starting with the 3-Meter when she totaled a score of 342.45. Sophomore Annika Lenz was third (280.05), followed by freshman Ciara Monahan (257.63) in sixth and sophomore Danni Repper (246.23) in seventh. In the 1-Meter, the freshman eclipsed the 300-point mark again with a 316.20. Lenz again was third (278.93), with Monahan (225.90, 7th) and Repper (219.00, 9th) rounding out the Bruin contingent.

The Bruins dead-heated for second in the 100 Free, as Dornick and Grover each had a 49.47. It was an NCAA 'B' qualifying time for both and tied for the eighth-fastest time in Bruin history. Kaunitz was fourth with a 49.86, also an NCAA 'B' mark. UCLA was third and fourth in the 200 Back with White (1:54.48) and Loper (1:58.41).

In the 200 Breast, Khojasteh was second with a 2:13.65, while Wine placed fourth (2:15.86), which was an NCAA 'B' qualifying time. In the 500 Free, Campbell was third (4:52.02), while Merlihan was fifth (4:54.06). In the 100 Fly, Grover was second (53.13), followed by Tarazona (53.17) and Kinnear (53.70). Junior Madison Applegate was sixth with an NCAA 'B' time of 54.34.

In the final individual race, the 400 Individual Medley, junior Arlyn Upshaw was third with a 4:15.30, improving her NCAA 'B' time. Tarazona was fourth (4:16.64) and freshman MK Kish fifth (4:21.28). In the final race, the quartet of Dornick, Mack, Grover and White were second with a 1:30.03.

The Bruins are back in action at the Pac-12 Championships in Federal Way, Wash., taking place February 25-28.
