FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - A pair of school records fell on Friday on the third day of the Pac-12 Championships at Weyerhaeuser King County Aquatic Center, as junior Allison Wine broke her own mark in the 100 Breaststroke, while the Bruins ended the evening with a new program record in the 400 Medley Relay. A total of five Bruins made the A final in their respective events on Friday.
It is the second and third school records broken by the Bruins during the Championships after setting a new mark in the 200 Medley Relay on Wednesday.
Coverage of Friday's action will air on Pac-12 Networks on Saturday at 10 a.m. and 10 p.m.
400 Individual Medley
Both Bruins swimming made the evening session, with junior Arlyn Upshaw advancing to the A final with a career-best 4:15.13, the sixth-fastest time in the preliminaries. Freshman MK Kish was 17th (4:23.41) to make the C race.
Upshaw kept her sixth position in the A final with a 4:16.12, while Kish, who moved up to the B race following some withdrawals, finished 15th overall with a 4:22.21 in the evening.
100 Butterfly
Five qualified for the finals, with three making the B race. Freshman Katie Grover was ninth in the morning with a 53.26, senior Noelle Tarazona placed 10th (53.30) and junior Katie Kinnear was 14th (53.62). Advancing to the C final were junior Madison Applegate (23rd, 54.35) and freshman Anna Quinn (24th, 54.45).
Tarazona and Grover flipped spots in the B final, as Tarazona won the race with a season-best 52.94, while Grover was right behind her with a 53.15. Kinnear placed fourth in the B race (12th overall) with a 53.50. In the C final, Applegate set a career best with a 54.02 to finish second in the race and 18th overall, while Quinn (54.77) was 24th overall.
200 Freestyle
All three Bruins who qualified for the evening session did so for the C final. Senior Monica Dornick was 17th (1:48.18), junior Katy Campbell 18th (1:48.19) and senior Ally Loper was 19th (1:48.51). Three more had impressive times in the morning, as freshman Carly Reid had a season-best 1:48.61 in an exhibition swim, freshman Sarah Kaunitz was 26th (1:49.54) and sophomore Michaela Merlihan recorded a career-best 1:49.69, good for 28th.
Loper led a 1-2-4 finish in the C final, establishing a career best with a 1:47.23. Right behind her was Dornick (1:47.34), then Campbell (1:47.83).
100 Breaststroke
A quartet of Bruins made the evening finals, as Wine broke her own school record. After going 59.70 on Feb. 13 at USC for UCLA's first-ever, sub-minute time in the event, the junior recorded a 59.46 in the prelims, the second-quickest swim in the morning. Seniors Jessica Khojasteh (13th, 1:02.07) and Taylor Carlson (15th, career-best 1:02.34) made the B race, while freshman Brigitte Winkler was 18th (1:02.79) to reach the C final.
Wine posted her third-straight swim under a minute in the A final, as she remained in second with a 59.75. In the B race, Khojasteh stayed at 13th overall with a 1:01.97, while Carlson was 16th (1:02.64). In the C race, Winkler swam a 1:04.37 (23rd overall).
100 Backstroke
Another five Bruins made the finals, as sophomores Linnea Mack and Madison White went 5-6 in the morning with a 53.02 and 53.07, respectively, to make the A race. Kinnear was 14th (54.91) to advance to the B final, while freshmen Hannah Grubbs (18th, season-best 55.49) and Marie-Pierre Delisle (23rd, 56.59) moved on to the C race.
Mack stayed in fifth in the A final with a 52.68, while White was seventh (53.03). In the B race, Kinnear had a 55.41 (15th overall), while in the C event, Grubbs (55.66) was 20th overall and Delisle 24th (season-best 56.28).
1-Meter Diving
Freshman Maria Polyakova set a season best in her preliminary six dives with a 328.40 to finish second. Sophomore Annika Lenz just missed out on the final by 4.30 points, as she had a 273.15 to place ninth. Freshman Ciara Monahan was 20th (252.60), while sophomore Danni Repper placed 21st (251.05).
In the final, Polyakova bettered her prelim total with a 328.95, but fell to fourth.
400 Medley RelayThe evening ended with another school record, as White, Wine, Tarazona and Mack posted a time of 3:34.54, bettering the previous program best by over a second. The previous mark was set in 2011 by Emily Andelson, Brittany Beauchan, Yasi Jahanshahi and Cynthia Fascella (3:35.83).
The Championships conclude on Saturday, starting at 10 a.m. with the prelims of the Platform Diving. The swimming prelims begin at 11 a.m. with the 200 Back, 100 Free, 200 Breast and 200 Fly. All heats of the 1650 Free, with the exception of the A heat, will get underway at 4 p.m., with the A heat and the rest of the finals starting at 6 p.m. The Platform final and the 400 Free Relay close out the week's festivities.
