LOS ANGELES - Senior Ally Carda tied a career high with 14 strikeouts on Tuesday against #13 Baylor, and after giving up the lead in the top of the seventh, she won it for #10 UCLA in the bottom half with a two-out, RBI single to give the Bruins a 3-2 victory at Easton Stadium.
The Bruins improve to 24-5 with the win, while the Bears fall to 14-6.
Carda (12-3) retired the first eight of the game, posting 1-2-3 innings in the first, second, fifth and sixth. She struck out the side in the first and third, two apiece in the second, sixth and seventh and one each in the fourth and fifth.
Prior to the seventh inning, the only baserunners allowed by the reigning NFCA National and Pac-12 Pitcher of the Week were a pair of two-out, hit by pitches in the third and fourth, until a leadoff single in the seventh broke up the no-hitter.
The Bruins were held to five hits, coming from Carda, senior Gracie Goulder, sophomore Gabrielle Maurice and freshmen Maddy Jelenicki and Kylee Perez.
Carda matched zeroes with Baylor's Heather Stearns for the first five innings. After Carda got through the sixth, her offense came up with a pair of runs in their half. Carda started the rally off with a walk, and two outs later, Jelenicki tomahawked a ball over the wall in left for her fourth homer of the season to put the Bruins up 2-0.
In the top of the seventh, Lindsey Cargill led off with a single to the 5-6 hole to break up the no-no, and one out later, Shelby Friudenberg broke up the shutout with a two-run homer to left, snapping Carda's 23 2/3 scoreless inning streak.
In the bottom of the seventh, Goulder drew a leadoff walk, moved to second on a grounder by junior Allexis Bennett and scored on Carda's single up the middle on a 1-2 pitch to give the Bruins their 10th straight victory.
The Bruins open up Pac-12 play this weekend at Easton Stadium against Utah. Friday's game will be at 7 p.m., followed by Saturday at 4 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m. Sunday's contest is sold out. Saturday and Sunday's games will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks, while all three contests will feature free audio and live stats on UCLABruins.com.
