GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Bruins set a pair of school records in the 200 Freestyle and 400 Medley Relays on Thursday during the first day of the NCAA Championships at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
In the very first heat of the very first race of the Championships, sophomore Linnea Mack, freshman Katie Grover, sophomore Madison White and senior Monica Dornick bettered the Bruins' season-best time (1:30.03) by nearly a second with a 1:29.05 to set a school record in the 200 Freestyle Relay. The previous UCLA best was a 1:29.16 by Kathryn Murphy, Mack, Ting Quah and Katie Kinnear set at last year's NCAA's.
In the individual swimming events, senior Noelle Tarazona set a new career best with a 1:59.10 in the 200 Individual Medley, improving on her position of the sixth-fastest swim in UCLA history. Her time was the 41st fastest in the preliminaries. Mack was 22nd in the 50 Free prelims with a 22.21, just .07 shy of making the consolation finals. In the 500 Free, junior Katy Campbell was 30th (4:43.94).
The swimming prelims wrapped up with another school record for the Bruins in the 400 Medley Relay. Twenty days after setting a mark of 3:34.54 at the Pac-12 Championships, White, junior Allison Wine, Tarazona and Mack swam a 3:34.25 to finish 18th in the prelims.
In the 1-Meter diving, freshman Maria Polyakova missed out on the consolation finals by 1.35, recording a six-dive score of 297.00. Sophomore Annika Lenz was 40th (253.60).
Friday's action starts with the 200 Medley Relay prelims at 8 a.m. PT. The Bruins qualified for the NCAA's with a school record at the Pac-12 Championships, as White, Wine, Tarazona and Mack swam a 1:37.17. A pair of Bruins will be represented in the 100 Butterfly, Tarazona and Grover. Tarazona had a season-best 52.94 at Pac-12's, while Grover swam a 52.96, the sixth-best time in UCLA history, in the same pool she'll be swimming in on Friday.
In the 200 Free, Campbell swims for the blue and gold after posting a career-best 1:47.01 at Winter Nationals, the sixth-fastest mark in school history. In the 100 Breaststroke, Wine will look to continue her amazing stretch in the event. Each of her last three swims have been under a minute, the only three in UCLA history, including a 59.46 at Pac-12's.
Two more Bruins, Mack and White, hit the pool in the 100 Backstroke. Mack set a school record in December with a 51.98, while White recorded her season-best time (and just .01 off her career high) of 52.68 at USC. The 800 Free Relay wraps up the swimming prelims on Friday. Campbell, senior Ally Loper, Tarazona and Dornick tallied a season-best 7:10.94 at Winter Nationals.
The Bruin divers move over to the 3-Meter on Friday, starting at 10:45 a.m. PT. Polyakova set a school record of 361.60 at the UGA Fall Invitational in December, while Lenz posted a season-best 314.40 at last week's Zones.
