Men's Tennis Downs Cal, 4-1 in Berkeley
April 12, 2015 | Men's Tennis
Unlike its match with the Cardinal, UCLA was able to gain a 1-0 advantage in doubles, posting victories at court Nos. 2 and 3. After Joseph Di Giulio and Karue Sell took care of business at the No. 2 spot, Dennis Mkrtchian and Austin Rapp clinched the point for UCLA with a 6-3 win over Filip Bergevi and Mads Engsted at court No. 3.
Although Cal would tie the match at 1-1 in singles following a straight-set victory at court No. 6, the Bruins were able to reel off three-straight victories to clinch the match 4-1. Wins by Martin Redlicki (court No. 2), Mkrtchian (court No. 3) and Sell (court No. 4) gave the Bruins an insurmountable advantage.
UCLA was leading at the two remaining matches when play was suspended, with Mackenzie McDonald up 3-2 in the third set over Andre Goransson at court No. 1, and Di Giulio up a set over J.T. Nishimura at court No. 5.
UCLA has just one more regular-season match remaining, as the Bruins host USC on April 16. With a win over USC, UCLA could still finish in a tie for first place in the Pac-12 standings. In order for that to happen, Cal would have to beat Stanford on April 18. The Cardinal lead the Pac-12 with a 6-0 record, while UCLA and USC are tied for second at 5-1.
Thursday's UCLA-USC showdown is slated to begin at 2:00 p.m. with doubles. Singles, which will be shown live on the Pac-12 Networks, will begin at 3:00 p.m.
