LOS ANGELES - The eighth-ranked Bruins used a six-run second inning to get back on the winning track on Wednesday at Easton Stadium, defeating Cal State Fullerton 9-1 in five.
Senior Ally Carda and junior Allexis Bennett, who were each named 2015 USA Softball Player of the Year finalists right before the game, both posted two hits. The Bruins (32-8) had eight hits as a team.
Freshman Johanna Grauer improved to 7-1 on the season with four shutout innings, striking out one and giving up two hits and two walks, pitching a 1-2-3 frame in the first. Freshman Selina Ta'amilo threw the fifth and gave up an unearned run and one hit.
The second inning started off with junior Brittany Moeai getting hit by a pitch, as she advanced to second on a wild pitch and to third on a single to right by freshman Kylee Perez. One out later, freshman Maddy Jelenicki walked to load the bases, which was followed by a single up the middle by junior Mysha Sataraka to score Moeai and Perez to make it 2-0.
Bennett then doubled over the Titans' center fielder, as Jelenicki and Sataraka came home with the third and fourth runs. Carda singled to left-center, and when Samantha Vandiver bobbled the ball, Bennett was able to come home to make it 5-0, as Carda took second. A single to left-center by sophomore Delaney Spaulding would bring in Carda with UCLA's sixth tally.
The Bruins added a run in the fourth. With two outs and the bases loaded, Moeai drew a walk to score Bennett to put the home team up 7-0.
Cal State Fullerton (25-16) got on the board in the fifth. Delynn Rippy reached second on a pair of Sataraka errors, moved to third on a fly out and scored on a Courtney Rodriguez single.
In the bottom of the fifth, sophomore Gabrielle Maurice led off with a walk and sophomore Jelly Felix ended the game with a homer to left, her second of the season, to give the Bruins a 9-1 win.
The Bruins head north to the Bay Area to take on Stanford this weekend, Friday and Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 12 p.m. Live stats will be available on UCLABruins.com.
