Bruins Advance to Match Play after 8th-Place Finish

The UCLA men's golf team advanced to the match play bracket of the NCAA Championships Monday and will play top-seeded Illinois in the quarterfinals Tuesday at Concession GC in Bradenton, FL.

The Bruins posted a final round score of 6-over par 294 and finished three shots in front of Georgia Tech for the coveted eighth spot. Illinois placed first at 1,155 (+3), followed by Vanderbilt at 1,157 (+5), Tied for third were Texas and Georgia at 1,158 (+6). USC (1,161, +9), South Florida (1,168, +16) and LSU (1,169 (+17) finished fifth through seventh.

Individually for the Bruins, junior Lorens Chan led the way with a 1-under par 71 and tied for 54th at 12-over 300 with teammate Jonathan Garrick, who signed for a final round 74 (+2). Senior Preston Valder was the Bruins' top finisher, tying for 16th place 289 (+1) after posting a score of even-par 72. Jake Knapp shot a 77 and finished in a tie for 38th place at seven-over 295. Senior Manav Shah finished 66th Monday at 14-over par 302. He had the drop score of 77 (+5).

Bryson Dechambeau of SMU won medalist honors, posting a final round score of 71 (-1) for a 72-hole total of 280.
