I Am ... Allison Wine

August 10, 2015 | Swimming & Diving

Coming off an outstanding freshman campaign that saw her make the NCAA Championships and swim the third-fastest time in Bruin history in the 100 Breaststroke, just fractions off the school record, Allison Gargalikis was an up-and-comer with the UCLA swimming program. During the summer between her freshman and sophomore campaigns, Allison found out she was pregnant.

With a difficult decision regarding her UCLA swimming career in front of her, Allison, her husband-to-be Mark and her family decided Allison's best move was to leave school and move back to the Bay Area. On Feb. 26, 2013, Dominic Wine was born, and in September 2014, Allison Gargalikis became Allison Wine.

While attending junior college at Diablo Valley College, swimming for the school out of Pleasant Hill, Calif., Wine still found herself having the itch to swim at UCLA. Coming down to Westwood for a “girls weekend” and finding some time to swim at her old pool, Wine knew that she wanted to come back to UCLA to re-join her teammates.

In the latest episode of the “I Am…” series, Bruin Films documents Wine's departure and return to UCLA, where the swimmer turned mother became the fastest breaststroker in school history and is on track to graduate this fall.
