SUGAR GROVE, Ill. - The seventh-ranked Bruins sit in second place at The Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms after more than 30 holes of golf were played on Saturday. The first round was completed, however the second round was suspended due to darkness with UCLA on holes 12 through 15.
In the first round, freshman Patrick Murphy shot a blistering 4-under 68 in his first collegiate event to better the rest of the field by two strokes. Murphy had six birdies, including two in a row to start the back nine. Senior Jake Knapp shot an even-par 72 (T-8th) in round one, coming back from three early bogeys to notch five birdies in a six-hole stretch (6-11).
Senior Jonathan Garrick and freshman Cole Madey each shot a +4 (76) to tie for 26th. Freshman Phil Delisi posted a non-scoring +7 (79, T-49), while sophomores Brandon Mai and Corey Shaun, playing as individuals, both shot +6 (78, T-44).
As a team through 18 holes, the Bruins were tied for first with top-ranked Illinois (292, +4).
The Bruins were on the latter part of the back nine in round two when play was suspended due to darkness at 7 p.m. CT. Garrick was 3-under through 12 holes, the top score for UCLA, which included an eagle on the par-5 7th. Delisi and Murphy are +2 for the second round, Madey +3 and Knapp +4, with all scores through 15 holes.
Murphy's 2-under overall score is currently tied for fourth, two strokes back of Illinois' Thomas Detry. Garrick's low second round has also gotten the senior into the Top 10, ranking in a tie for that spot at +1.
Upon suspension, the Bruins were at +8, 20 shots back of Illinois and two ahead of third-place Houston.
Play will resume at 6 a.m. PT on Sunday with a shotgun start, finishing the second round while beginning the third round simultaneously with the same pairings.
