BERKELEY, Calif. - Junior Jordan Anderson led the 13th-ranked Bruins with 20 kills, a .515 hitting percentage and eight digs, as UCLA swept California on Sunday at Haas Pavilion. Set scores were 25-20, 27-25, 25-16.
UCLA improved to 10-2 overall and 1-1 in Pac-12 play, while the Golden Bears fell to 6-7 and 0-2 in league action.
Sophomore Reily Buechler also had a good hitting day with 11 kills and a .429 hitting percentage, adding five digs. Redshirt sophomore Ryann Chandler produced 36 assists and five digs, setting the Bruins to a season-best .337 hitting percentage. Redshirt junior Haley Lawless had eight kills, junior Jennie Frager posted six blocks, junior Taylor Formico added 10 digs and senior Rachel Inouye recorded five digs.
The Bruins trailed early in set one, but used a long run to close out the opener with a victory. UCLA scored three of the first four points of the match, but with the score even at five, California reeled off six in a row and eight of nine to take a 13-6 advantage. However, it was all Bruins after that, as the visitors closed out the first on a 19-7 run.
Down 14-8, six in a row for the Bruins on four Anderson kills and two Cal service errors evened things at 14. After a Golden Bear sideout, another 6-0 UCLA run made it a 20-15 lead. Anderson added two more kills, Buechler and Frager had one each, Chandler served an ace and the Bears committed an error. Leading 23-20, kills by Buechler and Anderson wrapped up the 25-20 win. Anderson paced the Bruins with nine kills, while Buechler added four. Formico recorded five digs, as the Bruins out-hit the Golden Bears .364 to .269.
Set two was close throughout, with UCLA's biggest lead being two and Cal's being three. Trailing 5-4, the Bruins notched four of five on kills by Anderson and Frager and two Cal errors to take an 8-6 lead. The Bruins still led by two at 10-8 when the Golden Bears went on a 7-3 run to go up 15-13. UCLA responded with two Anderson kills, a Chandler/Frager block and a Formico ace to go ahead by a pair at 17-15.
Trailing 18-16, the Bears scored five straight to go ahead 21-18. However, UCLA wouldn't be denied, scoring five of seven on two Buechler kills, a Frager solo block and two Cal errors to even things at 23. The Golden Bears earned a set point at 24-23, but a kill by junior Claire Felix tied it up. An Anderson kill gave the Bruins their first set point, but Cal sided out to make it 25-all. Then back-to-back points by Anderson, first on a kill and then on a combo block with Frager, clinched the 27-25 win. Anderson again led the Bruins with seven kills, while Frager added four blocks with two kills. The Bruins out-hit the Bears .286 to .250.
The Bruins lost the first three points of set three, but stormed back with six straight on two kills each by Buechler and Lawless and a pair of Cal errors to go up 6-3. UCLA's lead didn't dip below two for the rest of the set. At 7-5, Anderson and Lawless kills, a Buechler/Felix block and an attack error put the Bruins up 11-5.
UCLA saw its lead rise to as much as nine at 24-15 and would finish off the sweep with a 25-16 victory in the third. Buechler had five kills in the third, while Anderson and Lawless added four each. The Bruins out-hit the Golden Bears .370 to .065.
The Bruins host Washington on Friday at Pauley Pavilion at 8 p.m. The match will be televised live on Pac-12 Networks.
